According to Ingmar Bergman, Svensk Filmindustri submitted the film to that year's Cannes Film Festival without informing him. Bergman claims he found out when he was reading the newspaper, saw the headline "Swedish Success at Cannes," and soon realized they were talking about his film.

In Ingmar Bergman's Sommaren med Monika, Åke Fridell plays the father of Monika, whose part is performed by Harriet Andersson. In this Bergman film, made only two years later, Fridell this time plays the part of Andersson's character's lover. In real life, the two were twelve years of age apart.
