Billie Burke broke her ankle during filming, causing the film to be 9 days behind schedule. She finished her subsequent scenes from a wheelchair.
First went into production in early 1936 as a vehicle for Luise Rainer.
Several members in studio records/casting call lists did not appear or were not identifiable in the movie. These were (with their character names, if any): Mira McKinney (Mrs. Spies), Charles Judels (Fritz Spies), Lionel Pape (Lord Piddlefield) and Claude King.
