Enrolled at the United States Naval Academy in 1937 as a Midshipman. Sometime between 1939 and 1940, he was unenrolled from the Academy due to vision problems, but later, during World War II, served the U.S. Army Air Corps as a pilot.
He was a close friend of Gregory Peck and Kenneth Tobey.
