Although the film was not released until 1962, it was actually shot in 1958.

The cast presented Boris Karloff with a signed broom when the production wrapped.

The censors successfully lobbied to have three scenes omitted: (1) The close-up of the leg amputation. (2) Lee's stabbing the night watchman in the back. (3) Karloff's throwing acid in Lee's face.

The working title was "Doctor of the Seven Dial", but MGM objected . They thought that foreign audiences would not be familiar with that area of London.
