Appeared with Rex Harrison in "Anne of the Thousand Days" on Broadway in 1948.

Daughter of a naval doctor and grew up in Annapolis, Maryland.

Educated in New York, Manila and Hong Kong.

First husband was theatre director Jed Harris, about whom the biography "The Curse of Genius" was written. They had one daughter. She remained married to second husband teacher/director Stanley Gould until his death. They also had one daughter.

Once tested for the role of Scarlett O'Hara.



While performing in a high school play, she caught the attention of a theater producer from St. John's College.
