1960: Nominated for a Tony award as Best Actress (Musical) for the Broadway musical "Take Me Along".

A close friend of "All My Children" (1970) co-star Louis Edmonds for many years, she is quoted extensively in his biography, "Big Lou," by Craig Hamrick. As discussed in the book, Herlie spent many weekends visiting Edmonds at his Long Island estate, The Rookery.

Daughter of Patrick Herlihy and Isobel Cowden Herlihy of Glasgow, Scotland.

Had two younger sisters: Geraldine (1924-1982) and Catherine (1926-2000).

Played Gertrude in "Hamlet" in two major productions on screen and stage: the Oscar-winning 1948 film version (Hamlet (1948)) with Laurence Olivier (she was 11 years his junior) and in the 1964 Broadway production of Hamlet (1964/I) with Richard Burton (she was seven years his senior) that was also filmed and shown in limited engagements.



She is survived by her brother, Alfred Herlihy, of Glasgow, Scotland.

She joined the Scottish National Theatre in Glasgow, Scotland.

She was nominated for a 1975 Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Guest Artist for her performance in "The Great Sebastians" at the Ivanhoe Theatre in Chicago, Illinois.
