Brother of the actor Barry Fitzgerald, with whom he appeared in a handful of films, from The Plough and the Stars (1936) to The Quiet Man (1952).
He was a fervent Irish nationalist and fought in the Easter Rising in 1916. He was subsequently captured and placed in an internment camp in North Wales.
