James Stewart and Kim Novak star in Alfred Hitchcock's masterpiece: an incisive, unsettling study of romantic obsession and manipulation.
Scottie (Stewart), a retired detective suffering from acrophobia investigates the strange activities of Madeleine (Novak), an old friend's wife, all the while becoming dangerously infatuated with her. As Scottie pursues her throughout the hilly streets of San Francisco, Hitchcock not only makes a shrewd comment on the act of watching (as he did in Rear Window), but also, as we meet Judy, another woman later in the film whom strongly resembles Madeleine, the idea of casting or remaking a person into someone else.
A commercial and critical flop upon its original release, Vertigo was simply ahead of its time-it replaced Citizen Kane at #1 in the 2012 British Film Institute's Sight and Sound critics' poll of the best films of all time.
