THE MYSTERY OF PICASSO
1956, HENRI-GEORGES CLOUZOT, FRANCE, 75 MIN. WITH PABLO PICASSO.
Clouzot and his friend Picasso joined forces to make a new kind of art film - one that would capture the mystery and process of creativity. Using special inks that bled through a semi-transparent surface, the indefatigable artist created a series of paintings that were to be destroyed at the end of the shoot. We see the canvas as it unfolds chronologically, filling with lines, exploding with colors, and, at one point, expanding into CinemaScope to follow the breadth of the artist's vision. Painting is presented as an existential adventure, with the artist like a boxer, juggler, dancer, bullfighter. In French with English subtitles. New 4K DCP digital restoration. (MR)
