A stylish New York society couple, Lucy (Irene Dunne) and Jerry (Cary Grant) Warriner, squabble over nothing and petulantly decide to divorce, in spite of the fact that they still love one another. A classic screwball (described as "sex comedy without the sex") The Awful Truth witnesses not the first blush of young love, but married life as a basis for madcap adventures, spiced with occasional philandering. McCarey started out crafting gags for Laurel and Hardy, and he confidently applies his comic chops to the zesty romantic entanglements of the Warriners. He won the Best Director Oscar for it (rare for a comedy) and the film includes one of the all-time great dog performances, by the wire-haired terrier, Skippy, playing the couple's pampered pooch, Mr. Smith.
