  1. PATHS OF GLORY
  1. 1957, Stanley Kubrick, USA, 86 min.
  2. With Kirk Douglas, Ralph Meeker

"Banned in France for 18 years, this
masterpiece still packs a wallop, though
nothing in it is as simple as it may first appear."
-Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader

Stanley Kubrick was the master of the modern war film, focusing five of his thirteen films on the subject. This harrowing dissection of the insanity of war is set in the French army during World War I. When an ill-conceived attack on an entrenched German position fails, three soldiers are arbitrarily chosen to be court-martialed; Douglas plays the officer assigned the hopeless task of defending them. Though PATHS was instantly praised as an antiwar classic, the young Kubrick was already demonstrating his elusive ability to escape categories, most tellingly in the controversially ambiguous coda. 35mm.
