ALL ABOUT EVE 2:15, 7:00
The magnificent Bette Davis plays an aging stage star who takes fawning fan Anne Baxter under her wing, only to see her cunning protégé steamroll away years of hard knocks at her elder's expense. Joseph Mankiewicz's acerbic comedy of manners contains some of the best dialogue ever to hit celluloid, with Davis, George Sanders, and Thelma Ritter more than able to deliver the goods. Nominated for 14 Academy Awards and winner of 6, including Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, Supporting Actor (Sanders) and Costume Design. (1950, 138 min, DCP)
THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND 4:45, 9:30 Glorious 35mm Print!
One of 2018's greatest movies was the new film by Orson Welles. Shot in the 1970s, and unfinished amid decades of legal and political complications, this film tantalized with its possibilities. Now Welles' grand opus has finally been completed to his specifications by producer Frank Marshall, actor/director Peter Bogdanovich, and film editor Bob Murawski. It chronicles the last day in the life of legendary filmmaker Jake Hannaford (played by legendary filmmaker John Huston), combining footage shot by the guests of Hannaford's 70th birthday party with scenes from Hannaford's new film, a bewildering and experimental work called The Other Side of the Wind. Welles' complex, engaging movie is a powerful statement on aging, creation, and the destructive apparatus of Hollywood, as well as a critique of toxic masculinity that couldn't be more timely. The cast includes Bogdanovich, longtime Welles collaborator/co-writer Oja Kodar, Susan Strasberg, Norman Foster, Mercedes McCambridge, and Edmond O'Brien. And featuring the last music score composed by Michel Legrand. Essential viewing. (2018, 122 min, 35mm)
