DOCTOR X (1932)
1933's MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM is the better remembered of the two, but director Michael Curtiz and stars Lionel Atwill and Fay Wray first teamed up on 1932's DOCTOR X, a sizable hit at the box office and an even more gruesome pre-Code chiller. For months, the "Moon Killer Murders" - each taking place under the light of a full moon, each leaving the corpse cannibalized - have terrorized New York City. Witnesses describe a suspect with a horribly disfigured face. Following up on a lead, reporter Lee Tracy investigates a private medical clinic headed by Doctor Xavier (Atwill), assisted by his daughter Joan (Wray) and staffed by several eccentric physicians, including Preston Foster, John Wray, Harry Beresford and Arthur Edmund Carewe. Could one of them be the killer? DIR Michael Curtiz; SCR Robert Tasker, Earl Baldwin, from the play "The Terror" by Howard W. Comstock and Allen C. Miller; PROD Hal B. Wallis, Darryl F. Zanuck. U.S., 1932, color/b&w, 76 min. NOT RATEDFollowed by:
MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM (1933)
Just how does deranged sculptor Lionel Atwill get the statues in his wax museum to appear so lifelike? Wisecracking newshound Glenda Farrell wants to find out. Fay Wray costars in this briskly paced pre-Code chiller, memorable for its twisty plot and fiery finale. This was the final studio film made with the two-color Technicolor process, the color quirks of which are effectively eerie here; it was remade in 1953 in 3-D as HOUSE OF WAX, starring Vincent Price. DIR Michael Curtiz; SCR Don Mullaly, Carl Erickson, from the story by Charles Belden; PROD Henry Blanke, Hal B. Wallis. U.S., 1933, color, 77 min. NOT RATED
