Ingmar Bergman inaugurated his "Trilogy of Faith" in 1961 with this chamber drama about a woman (Harriet Andersson) descending into madness. She goes on a beach vacation with her family, but despite the swims and fishing jaunts, her slide can't be stopped by her distracted writer father (Gunnar Björnstrand), her stalwart husband (Max Von Sydow), or her teenage brother (Lars Passgård). Bergman leavened the claustrophobia by shooting against the sere seascapes of Faro Island. 1961 Dir. Ingmar Bergman. 1.33:1 B&W DCP 90 min. In Swedish with English subtitles.
