Event Details

Blacklisted by the Hollywood establishment for its depiction of labor activism, and made with the support of the International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers, this film was inspired by the true story of a strike in New Mexico and used actual miners and their families as actors. An introduction by Dr. Ana Elizabeth Rosas, University of California, Irvine, considers the intergenerational and gendered underpinnings of mid-twentieth-century Latinx labor activism in U.S. mining towns and the role of women as community advocates and laborers in the U.S. mining economy.
