Why no Animalia?
Created by abishai_gangulee on Feb 8, 2017I was surprised there were no animals in this film, since animalia psychic powers can be an important ingredient in mentalism-themed films, even if they're stylish horror films such as this one.
Stephen King should have written about a dog or cat maybe that was able to communicate with Danny with psychic abilities. It would have added a nice touch (though there's the nice Scatman Crothers inkeeper character).
That's really what the Mike Nichols film Wolf is all about.
Of course, there's the scene of the haunting ghost of a hotel guest or someone dressed in a bear costume, but that's not the same thing...

The closest thing were the hedge maze animals that came to life in the book. Kubrick felt he couldn't make that well enough with the limited technology at the time and so opted for the hedge maze. I honestly believe that had he hired Jim Henson's studio they could have made it work, Henson was a genius when it came to that.

He said that but lots of people believe he just said that and really was just smart enough to know how stupid it would be to have "hedge animals come to life". The maze is such an awesome part of the film that I wouldn't trade for anything let alone some bushes. I think alot of people (not saying you are one of them) just want things to bitch about to tear down a great film and filmmaker and I believe they in now way shape of form find those stupid "living" hedge animals in the book interesting, like were they furiously reading pages as fast as they can enthralled hoping to god "please let there be more exciting sentences are animal shaped bushes that move" it just seems so stupid. They also probably felt so let down that kubrick didn't include any sharp toothed fire hoses either.

Totally agree, the idea of animals disgusts me as well. I'm just a huge Jim Henson fan and wouldn't mind if in an alternate universe there was a secret animal hedge version with Him Henson in control….no maze and chase through it would obviously be involved in this version so the ending would have to be quite different.
