Enid: The Most ANNOYING Girl in the World!

Ghost World is about odd balls, and I get it- artsy, nerdy people come in all shapes and sizes. But Enid is not likable, and I couldn't get into the film because of her character. Thora Birch, who is arguably one of the worst actresses I've seen on screen, plays Enid much in the same fashion she did with her character from American Beauty; dark, repressed, expressionless and devoid of any humanity. She reminds me of a bad imitator of Jennifer Lawrence, who of course came later. Enid is a bitch throughout the entire story. Her sidekick, Scarlett Johansson, is also a bit detached from normal life but she was far more likable (and prettier). Enid has no reason to be the way she is and that's where the question marks keep popping up. She's just very random. She abruptly takes Steve Buscemi into a porn store just to make fun of the guys in there. She prank calls strangers for laughs. She has no goals or future ambitions- and when her father asks her about where she plans to go to college, she barks at him and says she isn't even listening. She acts like a high school loser and it was totally pathetic. Who in their right mind acts this immature and self-righteous? Little kids. Or sociopaths. Regardless what was the point of her? As the audience are we supposed to root for her? In screenwriting class, they always tell us to have a main character that the audience can move forward with. They don't have to be perfect, but they do have to be somewhat likable. Enid was none of these things. Even her potential to become a great artist is ruined when she fails to show up to her own show. The teacher even offered her a scholarship to a school, but she showed up too late and by then she had failed the class because of a misunderstanding. She didn't even fight the school system or the stupid teacher. The scene just ends and we move on to more depression. Perhaps a stronger actress might have been able to pull off the subtleties we didn't notice, but not Thora Birch. Thank God her screen career ended after this displeasure. The one highlight about Enid - her wardrobe. Very unique and surprisingly pretty. The costumes in this film deserved recognition. Also Steve Buscemi was rightfully snubbed for his supposed "Oscar" worthy performance. He won the critic awards but was rightfully passed over by the academy. He didn't do much. He should have been cited for Fargo instead.

OMG! I LOVE Enid!!! I don't get why people don't seem to understand that this is a black comedy. Enid is sarcastic and morbid at times. Thora Birch's performance reminds me a little of Christina Ricci's in the Adams Family, especially the 2nd one! AVADA KEDAVRA!!!

The movie is less about Enid's journey than examining how she and Scarjo gradually grow apart, the latter moving into the real world while Enid continues to enjoy the quirky and bizarre like they did as friends. Once she realizes there's no one to relate to anymore on that level, she catches the bus and joins the spirits of the "Ghost World," the strange folk culture that no longer has a place in modern conformist society.

I like Enid, I understand Enid, I don't think I root for her one way or another, but I am entertained to see what she is going through. This was a cult Comic that a few people totally understood while it was off the radar of most of society, but had enough interest to be made into a movie. Now the movie introduces Enid to a larger audience. Its still a cult classic and Enid is not a hero character of any sorts, but enough of relate to her. Of course we don't have to live with her. . Ephemeron.
