About the film: This electrifying musical, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics from Stephen Sondheim, sets the ageless tragedy of Romeo and Juliet in the slums of 1950’s New York. West Side Story explores the rivalry between two teenage street gangs – white working-class Jets and Puerto Rican Sharks. When a member of the Jets falls in love with the sister of the Sharksʼ leader, things look hopeful at first, but rapidly go downhill. Illustrating the events are many memorable song and dance numbers such as ʻAmericaʼ, ʻSomewhereʼ and ʻI Feel Prettyʼ.

Please note that only United States residents are eligible to enter this giveaway contest. (see contest rules for further information)

BlogHub members ARE also eligible to win if they live within the Continental United States (as noted above).

Good Luck!

  2. Vicki Boston says:

I DID it in High School. And I DO know their LAST names. It’s in the novelization.

Riff Lorton/ Tony Wyzek/Bernardo&Maria Nunez/Chino Martin/Anita Palacito. Glad Hand’s REAL name is Murray Benewitz. George Chakiris did WSS in London before the film playing Riff HIMSELF.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Vicki, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Could you please confirm that you tweeted? Thanks!

  3. I like that the movie is Romeo and Juliet as a musical. I saw it on tv when I was quite young, so I would like to see it again. The soundtrack is good and Natalie Wood was just beautiful.

  4. Javier Valverde says:

What I love the most about West Side Story is the classic songs and music by Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein like Somewhere, Maria, and America. What I also love the most about West Side Story is the love story between Maria and Tony. I also love Rita Moreno’s acting and singing in the America number.

  5. Julie Moon says:

One of the best musicals ever… great songs, story and actors! To see it on the big screen would be wonderful!

  6. Jlwthe2nd says:

Oh, this is such a great classic movie/musical! I love the story, love the music, love the actors! This will be so fun to watch on the big screen!

  7. Sara Stewart says:

There are do many things in Westside Story that are just as relevant today. Different parts of society trying to get along(or not). I love Natalie Wood in everything, but Rita Moreno stole the show

  8. Mark PAGAN says:

“What is it you love most about West Side Story?” Ultimately, I think it’s the Sondheim poetry. Need there be more? No.. even as any number of us vs them parallels persist these six+ decades on.

  9. Migdalia Pizarro says:

I was quite young when I saw West Side Story. It was the first time I saw my people -people from Puerto Rico being portrayed on screen. It didn’t matter that it was a movie, to me it was real. The costumes and the customs were familiar to me. The over protective brother, the wearing of white until you got to a certain age. The accents….reminded me of my mother and my aunts. This movie spoke about a subject that many were not comfortable speaking about, racism. And it’s as relevant today as it was so many years ago.
And I hope that the generation of today get to love it as much as the rest of us has.

  10. Daniel G. says:

It’s been almost 35 years since I last watched this classic musical with my Mother on television. It was one of her favorites and it holds special memories for me. Seeing it on the big screen would be an amazing experience. Thank you.

  11. Shawn Moore says:

I enjoy very few musicals, but this is my favorite because it is so wonderfully shot – every scene just pops off the screen, and all the performances cannot be improved.

  12. Gloria Elizabeth says:

I love the soaring music and the leaping dance moves. I’ve seen this on stage and on the small screen but never on the big screen and would love to have the immersive experience of seeing this movie in its proper setting.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Thanks so much for entering Gloria, and Good Luck 🙂

      • Gloria Elizabeth says:

        Hi Annmarie,
I just got back from seeing this with my ballet-dancing 9-year-old granddaughter. The family is on a campaign to expose her to as many different dance styles and energies as possible. She loved it and pointed out where ballet influences surfaced in many of the dances. Thank you for managing this contest. We had a grand time. The tickets were much appreciated.

  13. Joel Henderson says:

I’ve never seen West Side Story but I’d love the opportunity to see it now. I appreciate the classics and this is one of them!

  15. This was the first movie musical that I studied in Junior High Music class (37 years ago). I was so taken by the story, the music, and the vivid colors that it always left an impression on me. Would love to watch on the big screen!

  16. Liliana Radwanski says:

I Love the Timeless Story of Romeo and Juliet retold as a Modern Musical.Music Composed by Sondheim and Bernstein are Treasures that are ageless.
George Chakiris gave a fabulous performance as
Shark Leader and our Heroine Maria’s Brother, Bernardo .Rita Moreno as Bernardo’s Love and Maria’s friend ,Anita gave Oscar Caliber performances.
Russ Tamblyn former child actor and Dancer as Jet Leader and Tony’s BFF was fabulous.
The movie told of Love and Racism. Gang Violence and forbidden Romance.

A Rumble gone bad set the tone for things to perhaps change.

I have loved this film since I was a child.I own the Bluray 50th Anniversary and have seen productions of play.I know every song .my favorites being tonight soliquy sung by jets, sharks Tony,Maria, and Anita.I feel pretty ,and I like to be in America.I so want to see it on the Big Screen

  17. Kat E says:

Love, love, love the music and dancing!!!

  18. Richard Leighton says:

“West Side Story” is no doubt one of the best musicals every put on film. There’s not a bad song throughout, a brilliant score, great choreography, the storytelling is innovative and it has Russ Tamblyn in it, well before “Twin Peaks” (let alone “War of the Gargantuas” and “Satan’s Sadists”).

Definitely want to see it in a theater already!

  19. Susie W. says:

First heard a song from this movie in a high school drama class over 50 years ago and was intrigued, but can’t remember seeing the movie on the big screen so would absolutely love to!

  20. Candy Pfaltzgraf says:

Filmstruck seems as though it was made for me! I would rather watch the classic movies than the newer ones. Drama, comedy, cult classics, foreign and musicals. They have it all!

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Candy, I will move your FilmStruck comment over to the FilmStruck contest page for you — but please confirm that you tweeted because I can’t seem to find your tweet. Thanks!

      • Candy Pfaltzgraf says:

I love classic movies, so yes I would love to win!

        • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Candy, this contest is over, but we’re giving away more movie tix this month — including Big — as well as lots of books and dvds, so be sure to check out the other contests.

  21. Jeanelle S Kleveland says:

I can’t wait to see this film on the big screen. What could be better? It is a modern day Romeo and Juliet with plenty of music and dancing. I saw Rita Moreno at one of the TCMFFs. She also was in love with a famous Nebraskan–Marlon Brando. Read her bio.

So many wonderful actors. I’m going whether or not I win tickets but tickets are even better.
