Ruth Hussey, James Stewart, Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn in The Philadelphia StoryRuth Hussey, James Stewart, Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story

About the film:  On the eve of Tracy Samantha Lord’s (Hepburn) wedding, her blue-blood ex-husband, C.K. Dexter Haven (Grant), returns. C.K. discovered that a national tabloid plans to do an expose on Tracy’s philandering father and has agreed to smuggle a reporter (James Stewart) into her wedding if the magazine kills the story on the elder Lord. But C.K. never expects that the woman he still loves will suddenly fall for the undercover reporter. Now, before the evening is over, Tracy will be forced to take an unflinching look at herself and to realize which of these three men she truly loves. This two-day event includes exclusive insight from TCM host Ben Mankiewicz.

91 Responses to Win Tickets to see “TCM Big Screen Classics: The Philadelphia Story (Giveaway runs through Feb 3)

  1. M.T. Fisher says:

The chemistry between the three leads and the supporting cast. (Roland Young is a hoot.) Everyone is working on all cylinders, and it’s a joy to watch them.

  2. Brittaney B says:

What’s not to love about The Philadelphia Story? It has three of my favorite stars, Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and Jimmy Stewart as well as some of my favorite character actors, Roland Young, Mary Nash and Virginia Weidler. I love the way Virginia plays Dinah Lord, in particular her performance of Lydia, the Tattooed Lady. It’s just one of my favorite movies ever!

I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Such a fun film… I think it’s going to be wonderful on the Big Screen! Thanks for entering and Good Luck 🙂

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Brittaney, Congrats you are one of our winners! Just emailed you. If you don’t receive the email, please let me know. Thanks!

  3. Kassidy J Jacobs says:

I love the cliché of love triangles! Katharine Hepburn has so much chemistry with her fellow actors, and the audience gets pulled into her choice! I would love to take my father to see this, he’s a big Cary Grant fan. I do not have a Twitter so I am posting the message here.

  4. Kari says:

What I love most about The Philadelphia Story is Cary, Katharine, & Jimmy all in one place! You couldn’t ask for a better cast for a romantic comedy!

  5. Mikary says:

    1) I’ve never seen “The Philadelphia Story,” but how can you miss with a cast that includes Hepburn, Grant, and Stewart?! What better way to see it for the first time than on the Big Screen? (And there are at least two big screens available to me at which to see it.)

    2) I just entered to win tickets to see “TCM Big Screen Classics Presents: The Philadelphia Story” on the Big Screen courtesy of @ClassicMovieHub & @FathomEvents, BUT I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  6. Daniel G. says:

I have not yet seen “The Philadelphia Story”. Over the last few years, I have come to appreciate the Hollywood screwball comedy. As many have already mentioned, the cast is amazing. In addition to Hepburn, Grant, & Stewart in front of the camera, George Cukor & Joseph L. Mankiewicz are behind it. With a team like that, this is sure to be an amazing movie to see on the big screen.

*I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  7. Shawn Moore says:

It is one of the best cast films ever. I have seen it too often to even imagine Gable/Tracy in the male leads, as originally targeted. It allowed Jimmy Stewart to emerge as a star who could hold his own with Grant & Hepburn. (I love his drunk scene with Grant!). And I will definitely go see it on the big screen (AGAIN!) because it is my girlfriend’s favorite film. 🙂

  8. Ashley Townsend says:

I have not seen the Philadelphia Story but it is definitely on my list to watch. Katherine Hepburn has such a presence on the screen that I can’t take my eyes off of and to team her up with Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant, it could only mean a movie with a lot of laughs which I hope to finally be able to get to see especially on the big screen.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Ashley, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Please confirm that you tweeted — or just let me know by commenting back here if you don’t have a twitter account. Thanks so much!

      • Ashley Townsend says:

        Hello,

I did tweet right after I commented here. It could be because my profile is private. Should I unlock it or is there something else I can do?

        Thank you,
        Ashley

        • Annmarie Gatti says:

Oh, it’s definitely because it’s private… No worries at all… don’t unlock it… you are officially entered and Good Luck 🙂

  9. Javier Valverde says:

What I love about “The Philadelphia Story” the most is Katharine Hepburn’s mercurial performance as Tracy Lord. She is at once funny and dramatic, something that most audiences were not aware of before because she was known mostly as a dramatic actress. I also love his interactions with Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart because their comedic interactions made the movie a success.

  10. Mark PAGAN says:

Second-best cover of “Lydia the Tattooed Lady” on film! The continued absurdity of Dinah Lord. Two word summary from Mike: “Idiot, probably.” (Mike doesn’t know women, either.)

  11. Gloria Elizabeth says:

I do not have a Twitter account so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.
I love Katharine Hepburn, whether she was being funny or serious, and she was funnier with Cary Grant than with anyone else (even Spencer Tracy). I love this particular movie and I love seeing old movies in beautifully restored copies on the Big Screen. I already have plans to see this on February 21 with a friend. Winning tickets would just make the whole thing even more fun!

  12. Greg Bryant says:

In what other movie can you see Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn AND Jimmy Stewart together in the same film? The answer is NOWHERE!. Grant and Hepburn did other movies together, but this is the only film in which they appeared with Jimmy Stewart! (Plus Stewart won his Oscar for this movie.)

I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  13. Benedetta Naglieri says:

My favorite part is the relationship between James Stewart and Ruth Hussey. The relationship feels so real to life and modern. Hussey plays the part as such an intelligent and smart woman and Stewart is the perfect oblivious male. I love strong women in movies.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Benedetta, I cannot seem to find your tweet. Could you please confirm that you have a twitter account, or just let me know by commenting back here if you don’t have a twitter account. Thanks so much 🙂

  14. Rodrigo Gonzalez-Torres says:

I have not seen this movie but seeing the all star cast it has I’m surprised I haven’t. James Stewart is one of my favorite actors and I would love to see him on the big screen.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Rodrigo, I cannot seem to find your tweet. Could you please confirm that you have a twitter account, or just let me know by commenting back here if you don’t have a twitter account. Thanks so much 🙂

  15. Such a brilliant and timeless film, really flawless in every way – phenomenal script with intelligent, sharp, witty banter, with substance and solid storyline development…and one of the most extraordinary casts ever assembled, from Kate, Cary, and Jimmy, all the way through the entire supporting line-up – just outstanding. One of my all-time favorite films and I would just love to see it on the big screen! My mom and I used to go see all the Fathom classics on the big screen together, and this will be my first time attending one since she passed away, but I will know that she is right there with me, enjoying it just as much as I am, as The Philadelphia Story was always one of her favorite films as well.

  16. Allison Sadlier says:

It’s not exaggeration when I say that this is my all-time favorite movie. I have the poster on the wall of my apartment. It’s one of those rare films that has the perfect balance between comedy, romance, and drama. Katherine Hepburn was never better and delivers such a heartfelt performance. It doesn’t get any better than Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart! C.K. DEXTER HAVEN!! This movie’s witty screenplay will never cease to make me laugh and touch my heart.

  17. Kaykitties says:

I love the moments between Jimmy Stewart and Katharine Hepburn in this movie. They’ve so touching. Ruth Hussey is always good

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Kay, I cannot seem to find your tweet. Could you please confirm that you have a twitter account, or just let me know by commenting back here if you don’t have a twitter account. Thanks so much 🙂

  18. Keara Wolak says:

What’s not to Love? It’s yar. Grant. Hepburn. Stewart. What a cast.

  19. CaitlynD says:

I haven’t seen it yet, yes, big cinema shame. With this opportunity it is required I see it in the theater first, how it was meant to be seen!

  20. Marcia Watters says:

Not only does it have the most magnificent cast, but the story line itself is delightful How can you not love an 11 yr old girl singing Lydia the Tattoo lady while accompanying herself on piano? Or a bitter divorcee who expects her fiance to love her more than she loves herself? An Ex husband who can still rile things up?
    It’s one of the best!

  21. Angie Barber says:

The quintessential screwball comedy due to casting, story pace, and razor-sharp witty dialogue. I anticipate a new appreciation for this romp on the big screen due to the superb talent of its cast, both leading and character actors: this cast was born to play on the big screen!

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Angie, I cannot seem to find your tweet. Could you please confirm that you have a twitter account, or just let me know by commenting back here if you don’t have a twitter account. Thanks so much 🙂

  22. Pamela Smith says:

Adore the banter between Cary Grant & Katherine Hepburn in The Philadelphia Story. From the very first scene between them when she is throwing him & his golf clubs out of the house & with his hand on her face she falls flat on her back, it is an attention grabbing classic romcom.

  23. Lisa Vigna says:

I’ve never seen this classic. But I love Stewart, Hepburn and Grant so I know I’d love this classic!

  24. Elizabeth M. says:

I love “The Philadelphia Story.” I’m only 26 but I grew up watching and falling in love with all the films and stars on TCM. My dad loved old movies and, as the significantly youngest baby in the house and the most like my dad, I was always watching them with him- while my older brother and sister were busy being teenagers. I was in awe of the Golden Age of Hollywood and, when I got older, my love and knowledge of classic cinema (growing and going with me through high school and college) started to far exceed my father’s and then it was me showing and telling him about all these great films and actors; it’s one of those things that is still a cementing part of our relationship to this day.

We both love all 3 of these leads: Cary Grant and his sophisticated/classic style and the way he channeled his humor through it, Katherine Hepburn’s elegance in drama and comedy, and, while my dad was less familiar with him than I was, I was just plain in love with Jimmy Stewart and that signature drawl of his. Seeing all 3 of them together in one film- one of the first from the Golden Age I ever saw- with their shared undeniable chemistry, in my first classic based in and named for my very own hometown (Philly!) ,was just the cementing icing on an already attractive cake. It’s one of a select few films that will still keep me in the house on a free weekend, whenever I see it on, and my father and I have rewatched it together many times throughout the years. It’s a classic and one of my favorites (I even know the story that inspired the play and playwright behind it).

While I’m a big fan of musicals- particularly those starring Bing Crosby and/or Frank Sinatra, and who didn’t love Grace Kelly (Philadelphia’s own Princess!)- and the great music, colors, and dancing of “High Society”, the musical remake still falls second to the original for me. And though the late, great, and aptly named Princess Grace had all the elegance, style, and personal and professional experience of high society, the role of Tracy Lord was LITERALLY made for Katherine Hepburn.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Thanks so much for this wonderful reply! So many of us classic movie fans owe our love of these films to our parents who shared them with us… a gift that lasts a lifetime… Thanks so much for entering and Good Luck “)

  25. Cecilia Rodriguez says:

What do I love about the “The Philadelphia Story”??? OMG…there is SO MUCH to LOVE! For instances, I love how Jimmy sings “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” while carrying Kate….that great bit of improv Cary did when Jimmy hiccups and Cary says “excuse me.” Just LOOOOVE this film and can’t wait to see on the big screen!

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Cecilia, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Could you please confirm that you tweeted, or let me know here if you don’t have a twitter account. Thanks!

  26. Kerry Dunn says:

Why do I love The Philadelphia Story? Two words: Jimmy Stewart. When I was about 15 years old I became obsessed with him. I’d record every movie of his that came on TCM onto VHS tapes and watch them over and over.

  27. Diane Blake says:

It’s a tender love story full of witty banter. It has it all!

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Diane, I can’t seem to find your tweet. If you tweeted please confirm, and if you don’t have a twitter account, please let me know by commenting back here. Thanks so much 🙂

  28. Sara Stewart says:

One of THE best movies made. A stellar cast (love Jimmy Stewart in a comedy), Grant and Hepburn play off of each other perfectly.

  29. Francine Olewinski says:

I love the quick, witty dialogue. And Cary Grant, of course.

  30. Becky Schonbrun says:

What do I love most about Philadelphia Story? I think it’s that the writing and acting rises above the truly awful misogyny within the story (yes, product of it’s times) and I can’t help it.

  31. Marcia says:

Ummm…the film isn’t The Philadelphia, it’s The Philadelphia Story.

“That said, we’ll be giving away EIGHT PAIRS of tickets to see “TCM Big Screen Classics: The Philadelphia” – the timeless classic starring Cary Grant, Katharine Hepburn and James Stewart — the way it was meant to be seen — on the Big Screen!”

My favorite part of The Philadelphia Story is that it was Kate’s “comeback” film, and that it was specifically written for HER. The chemsitry betweem Grant, Hepburn and Stewart is superb as well.

  32. Steena Williams says:

What is it about “The Philadelphia Story” that you love most? And, if you haven’t seen it, why do you want to see it on the Big Screen?

I actually saw High Society (the 1956 remake) first &, don’t get me wrong, Grace Kelly is fantastic. She’s absolutely the “goddess” Dex talks about. But that’s just the problem, that statuesque goddess never truly melts away. When I saw Hepburn’s Tracy Lord in Philadelphia Story, I was smitten. She’s both ice and fire. Katharine brings Tracy’s internal struggle to the fore in a way that only her New England feistiness can.

  33. What I love most about the movie is Jimmy Stewart’s drunk scene with Cary Grant. Not to dismiss the rest of the movie and the brilliant contributions of Hepburn, Weidler, Young, Hussey, and many others — it’s a great film in so many ways — but this is the one thing I love best. Stewart is incandescent, funny as he’s ever been, shooting off in all directions. And Grant offers him the support of a wise and seasoned professional, letting Stewart take the lead but still matching him ad lib for ad lib. Say what you will about that Best Actor Oscar, I’d have given it to Stewart for that scene alone, and I only wish Grant could have had one too!

  34. Erin Connor says:

    2 words—Cary Grant!!

  35. Sherri McKnight says:

    Cary Grant — **SWOON!!**
    Katharine Hepburn — FLAWLESS
    Jimmy Stewart — JIMMY STEWART

    These are my reasons!

  36. greg alvarez says:

havent seen it but i love classic cinema on the big screen and would enjoy watching something old but new to me.

  37. Shirley Petko says:

I have seen the movie before but I was younger. My grandmother would introduce me to all of the great old movies and I saw this when being introduced to Cary Grant. I think he is so dreamy and love him in North by Northwest so I watched this. I thought the chemistry between all of the actors was fantastic and I fell in love with Jimmy Stewart and Katherine Hepburn. I would love to see the movie on the big screen to remind me of my grandmother, who I lost a few years back. It would be great to be re-introduced to this movie all over again!

  38. Janet Callan says:

One of my top 5 movies! I just love the cast, the banter, the fun of it all! I watch it every time it is on TCM and think it would be so wonderful to see it on the big screen! I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  39. Kara Cardella says:

My favorite part about The Philadelphia Story is Tracy’s little sister! She’s hilarious.
I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message. (I did post to Facebook)

  40. The Philadelphia Story is the quintessential comedy film with superb acting, lovable characters, and hilarious throughout. It is absolutely one of the best films of all time.

    -Christina Ritter
    @CMRitterActor

  41. Colleen M says:

The cast, of course! James Stewart’s drunk scene is one of my favorites!

  42. Andrea Redd says:

The on-screen chemistry between Hepburn, Grant and Stewart is unparalleled! And the writing is the best. I can’t wait to enjoy it on the big screen!!

  43. Ingrid Edwards says:

I never had the pleasure to watch this movie, but I would love to have the chance to see it for the first time with my oldest son, 17. We watched Casablanca not long ago on the big screen and it was a wonderful experience for both of us.

    Thank you for this opportunity!!!!

  44. Judy Saluri says:

I so love the interplay between Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant. It’s been quite some time since I’ve seen this movie and can’t wait to see it on the big screen as it was meant to be viewed. Thanks for bringing back these great classics to the big screen! I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  45. Kris Chavis says:

I first saw The Philadelphia story when I was 10, and loved it, but probably couldn’t tell you why. Now, in my mid-40s, I love how each new tome I watch it, it becomes more and more relatable: their subtle marriage/love jokes, the fake snobbery the 2 daughters use on Jimmy Stewart when he first arrives, Lydia the tattooed lady of course, and the incredible chemistry between Cary Grant & Jimmy Stewart. It’s a great movie that will survive! My friends have never seen it, so I’d love to introduce them to it on the big screen!
I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  46. Sarah Johnson says:

I love the chemistry between Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. They were just so natural and effortless with each other. There was also such a playfulness between them that makes watching them together delightful.

  47. Renee Butler says:

I have never seen “The Philadelphia Story” but it stars my two favorite actors, Jimmy Stuart and Cary Grant. I’ve heard it’s a great movie and would love to see it on the big screen with my husband.

  48. Jlwthe2nd says:

I don’t think I’ve seen this movie in its entirety, which is why I’d love to see it on the big screen. I adore Cary Grant and Katharine Hepburn. I love seeing the classic movies brought back to the theaters, I try to go every month. I want to bring my husband with me for this one.

I do not have a twitter account so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  49. Chip Arter says:

    The stars. Great acting.
I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  50. Amy Sheridan says:

I LOVE Jimmy Stewart and I LOVE Katherine Hepburn and LOVE Cary Grant!! But this is the movie that made me absolutely gaga over Jimmy as a young girl, and it’s never faded. My grandmother showed me all of the great old movies when I was a kid and I’m passing the love for these films on to my 3 children. They are usually the only kids in the theater for these classics, but they are so engaged! Thanks for bringing them to the big screen!

I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  51. Michael Dobkins says:

There isn’t a single performer in this movie who doesn’t make the most of the part they’re given — something that can be claimed for any movie, but in this cast manages to do this without upstaging or stealing the movie from the other performer. That’s a rarity.

  52. Kevin Wohler says:

I love the interaction between Jimmy Stewart and Cary Grant when Macaulay Connor (Stewart) is drunk and seeks out C.K. Dexter Haven (Grant). That’s one of the funniest and yet most endearing scenes in the film because it shows Haven is really a good man who realizes the mistakes of his past.

  53. Jennifer Chapman says:

I loved all the snappy one-liners. This movie got me interested in black & white movies; I hadn’t known they were so funny. I use so many lines from this movie: “To hardly know him is to know him well,” “You’ll never be a 1st rate writer or a 1st rate human being, until you’ve learned to have some regard for human frailty,” and “You’ve got a good mind, a pretty face, a disciplined body that does what you tell it to. You have everything it takes to be a beautiful woman except the one essential – an understanding heart, and without that you may as well be made of bronze.” And who can forget Lydia the tattooed lady?

  54. Jaime Lyn says:

I have always wanted to see The Philadelphia Story after reading about it in an article. I have been on the lookout for a copy but seeing it on the big screen would be simply amazing!

I love Katherine Hepburn and the humor in this movie sounds wonderful. They don’t write movies like this one anymore!

  55. Jannette Kutchins says:

I love classic films, though I have not seen “The Philadelphia Story” yet. Seeing this on the big screen will be a memorable event.

I just entered to win tickets to see “TCM Big Screen Classics Presents: The Philadelphia Story” on the Big Screen courtesy of @ClassicMovieHub & @FathomEvents, BUT I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  56. Karen McDermott says:

I love this movie so much; the dialogue is just so on point. Movies need to be written like this again.

  57. Julie Moon says:

I love The Philadelphia Story! Some of the best actors and actresses doing some great work! And the writing is perfect.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Julie, tried a few times to reach you via email about winning the contest. I’ll need info this weekend, so if you didn’t receive the email, please let me know asap. Thanks!
