Daryl Hannah, Julia Roberts,  Shirley MacLaine, Dolly Parton and Sally Field,  Steel Magnolias

About the film: Six icons of the silver screen – Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts – come together in this hilarious and heartwarming story of life, love and loss in a small Louisiana parish. At the center of the group is Shelby, newly married and joyfully pregnant, even though her diabetes could make childbirth life-threatening. Terrified at the possibility of losing her only daughter, M’Lynn looks to her four closest friends for strength and laughter as she battles her deepest fear of death to join Shelby in celebrating the miracle of new life. A classic story of family, strength in women, and big southern hair, the big screen is the perfect way to experience the Magnolia’s Louisiana charm and celebrate 30 years of Steel Magnolias. This anniversary event includes special insight from Turner Classic Movies. Remastered in 2K, this digital print of Steel Magnolias features a 5.1 upmix from restored audio.

Please note that only United States residents are eligible to enter this giveaway contest. (see contest rules for further information)

BlogHub members ARE also eligible to win if they live within the Continental United States (as noted above).

Good Luck!

The missus has agreed to accompany me to the TCM True Grit screening; I may well be required to make it up to her by taking this in (!). Epic cast should make it a bit painless..

  2. Gloria Elizabeth says:

Oh, sweet Jesus. Daughters cranking at mothers and fathers shooting at trees, supposededly at the behest of mothers. Is there anything more classic than that?

  3. Jlwthe2nd says:

I’ve yet to see this movie, but love all those amazing actresses who are in it. Of course seeing it on the big screen just makes it come alive.

  5. Morgan Johnson says:

Steel Magnolias is a classic because the women in the film invoke feelings that are universal in womanhood. Longing, frustration, ambition, fear, rage, amusement. This movie also encapsulates a time when the standard of southern womanhood was putting on seasonal and family events, and not much else. However ‘eventful’ they may be, each the Magnolias are balancing many challenges in their own lives, some more painful than others. But they put on a brave face and press on. They are steel. This movie is timeless and offers so much. Truly a classic!

  6. Barbara Bogard says:

I would like to see “Steel Magnolias” on the big screen again. I would take my friend Gaylene with me. It’s her favorite movie, and she’s currently fighting cancer; this movie would really lift her spirits.

I believe ‘Steel Magnolias’ is a classic in the fact that the cast is stellar-Shirley McLaine, who began as a dancer and starred in movies with classic men-Jack Lemmon, Frank Sinatra, Jack Nicholson, etc.. Olympia Dukakis-another oldie, but goodie, Julia, Dolly,
Darryl and of course, Sally, from flying Nun to Gidget, to Norma Rae, etc.

  8. julie moon says:

The A-list cast (some legends and some up and coming superstars) is fantastic… they really brings the characters to life, and the writing is brilliant. A funny, loving, feisty group of characters and a story that is heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. A modern classic!

  9. Erin Sullivan says:

What make Steel Magnolias such a timeless classic? You have Sally Fields, Dolly Parton, Shirley Maclaine & Julia Roberts in this movie. They made this movie so great & perfect by making their own portrayal of their characters coming to life in this movie in more ways than one. You can’t pick a better movie than this one. For sure.

  10. Sheilla Wigton says:

This movie encompasses every feeling and every type of woman. There is humor, sarcasm, strength, stubbornness, sadness, and “if you can’t say anything nice, sit next to me.” This movie makes me laugh and cry, while longing to be a part of their group. If a movie can prepare you to be a mother or a best friend? Steel Magnolias is that movie.

  11. Shannon Townsend says:

My grandmother took me to see Steel Magnolias when it was first released (when I was probably too young) at our old domed theatre in the South. It is a classic to me because of the relationships ,young and old examined, the raw emotion of bold women standing up for themselves and speaking their mind, comedic antics (physical and verbal) and facing life’s dilemmas head on. It has always been one of my favorite movies and I would love to see it on the big screen again being as I was 5 or 6 the first time!

  12. The reason I want to see this movie is because: I think it’s a wonderful movie, also I love the people who star in this film: Sally fields, Robert harling, dolly Parton, Julia Roberts , shirley maclaine, Daryl hannah, olympia Dukakis, Tom skerritt, and Sam shepherd .

  13. Liliana Radwanski says:

This Movie Represents Friendships and Love between Women.
They watch 1 of their Friend’s Daughter grow up. Beginning of Movie we see the ladies going to their Friend’s beauty shop owned by Dolly Parton.
They are getting ready for Shelby’s Wedding, played by a young Julia Robert in her early possibly 2nd movie. Sally Field is her loving mother who is worried because Shelby is a Diabetic.
On the Onset, Shelby Experiences a Diabetic Seizure. she is given juice to stabilize her sugar. Shelby is a young girl and her mom is afraid for he as, she knows Shelby wants kids.

This movie became a classic & we remember it years later for the friendship and love. having kids get married. and the sadness of losing a child.
Sally Field was amazing in this movie. Once Shelby is gone, she goes to cemetery & questions why her beautiful daughter had to die & leave her child & husband. her friends comfort her.

I would love to see this movie on The Big Screen!

  14. Crystal N Curlee says:

This movie shows the bond women have when faced in adversity. How we survive and latch on to one another for comfort and strength. The humor is exquisite and timeless. The lessons can be carried on to each generation. That would make it a classic in my eyes. Life’s lessons all wrapped in one movie. This classic will always have a special place in my heart. Dolly is a trip! The cast is wonderful.
