James Stewart and Jean Arthur in Mr. Smith Goes to Washington

About the film: The naïve Jeff Smith (James Stewart) is appointed as a U.S. Senator by a corrupt political party machine headed by the Governor, a publisher and Senator Paine (Claude Rains). Paine, hoping to keep Senator Smith from prying into a pending bill for an unnecessary but profitable dam, suggests to Smith that he sponsor a bill for his own pet project, a boys’ camp. Meanwhile, Smith’s disillusioned secretary, Saunders (Jean Arthur), who is on Paine’s payroll, has fallen in love with Mr. Smith. She informs him that the dam and camp share the same land site! Shocked, Mr. Smith threatens Paine with exposure, but Paine tells the senate that Smith owns the land. Mr. Smith fights back with a heroic one-man filibuster. This two-day event includes exclusive insight from Turner Classic Movies.

Please note that only United States residents are eligible to enter this giveaway contest. (see contest rules for further information)

  1. Javier Valverde says:

What makes Mr. Smith Goes to Washington a classic is the idealism in American democracy demonstrated by Jimmy Stewart’s Jeff Smith against the corruption of Governor Jim Taylor (Edward Arnold) and Senator Joseph Paine (Claude Rains). This film represents a belief in American democracy that is at the core of our values. Frank Capra gave inspired direction in this film and it’s one of his best films of career.

  2. Matt Whitehurst says:

Frank Capra tells a story that is based around our government. It has humor, dramatic sub plots and a special charm to it that makes me want to watch it over and over.

  3. Noah Kilpatrick says:

I am a huge fan of James Stewart (his role in Vertigo being my favorite), so I would love to see this classic on the big screen!! Thanks for the opportunity!

  5. Liliana Radwanski says:

I Love Jimmy Stewart and have never seen this film.
He plays an honorable and decent man here who is thrown into Politics by a corrupt Political Machine. I would so love to see this film on the big screen.

  6. Jodi says:

I’ve never seen “Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” but have always wanted to do so. I adore Jimmy Stewart” and have loved him in every movie and admire him greatly for his service to our country and his moral compass.

  7. Rebecca H says:

I absolutely love Jimmy Stewart! Vertigo and Bell, Book, and Candle are my top two favorites of his movies. I have not had a chance to see Mr. Smith Goes To Washington. It would be a pleasure to see this movie on the silver screen

  8. Thomas Michalak says:

Frank Capra inspires with stories of regular people doing great things.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Thomas, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Could you please confirm that you tweeted, or just let me know if you don’t have a twitter account. Thanks!

  9. Jason S says:

I have never seen Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, but am a big fan of Jimmy Stewart and Frank Capra and would love to experience the movie on the big screen.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Jason, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Could you please confirm that you tweeted, or let me know if you don’t have a twitter account, or if it is a private account. Thanks so much.

  10. Don McDaniel says:

For me MSGTW is a classic because I have a family member who is in the movie in addition to it being just a great movie. His name is Edwin August and he is one of the senators in the chamber. He is actually seated to the right of James Stewart or to the left of him as you look at the screen. In one scene during the filibuster, JS asks him “How am I doing?” and Edwin winks at him. While I have seen this movie multiple times at home I have never seen it on a BIG screen. It would be an honor to win this contest although I’m probably going to take my wife and kids anyway. BTW Edwin August was a silent film writer, director and actor in the early days of film. He worked for multiple studios but is also in other films as an extra late into his 40 year career. “Citizen Kane” and “The Magnificent Ambersons” to name a couple. Thanks in advance for doing the screening.

  11. Mikary says:

I have never seen “Mr. Smith Goes To Washington” on any size screen, so it would be wonderful if my very first viewing was on the big screen with an audience. We need a man like Mr. Smith in Washington now!

*** I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message. ***

  12. Mark PAGAN says:

Never seen it complete; this will be a perfect way to remedy that!

  13. Philip Johnson says:

The film is a classic because it makes you yearn for a time when politicians would fight corruption regardless of party instead of bowing to the whim of a corporation paying for them to pretend to believe in their causes. Jimmy Stewart is never identified as a democrat or republican in the film.

  14. BobH says:

Jimmy Stewart’s portrayal of an idealistic young man who refuses to surrender his values and principles in the face of overwhelming pressure to capitulate to the greed and corruption that informs our darker impulses is as timely today as it ever was.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Bob, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Could you please confirm that you tweeted, or let me know if you have a private account, or if you don’t have a twitter account at all. Thanks.

  15. Jerry Stewart says:

My namesake, Jimmy Stewart is the best reason to see this film. I have seen it a number of times on the small screen. This would be a treat.

  16. Story of Mr.Smith Goes to Washington is a marvelous version of an immortal and universal narrative; David and Goliath. The script of the film also states that several times; for example at the beginning of the film, Paine and Smith talk about lost causes and Smith’s father struggle against unbeatable power. And also a CBS radio speaker states that similarities between David and Goliath story and Mr.Smith’s fight against Taylor and friends. Just like Don Quijote and Cyrano de Bergerac; Jefferson Smith takes his place among heroes who fight against Goliath. If that doesn’t make the story ‘classical’ what does?

  17. C says:

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is a classic because it exhibits a patriotic, moral spirit in action, taking the reins against wrong, in a timeless display of courage and endurance.

  18. Dizzle729 says:

Mr Smith was the first Capra film I ever saw. It was shown in one of my high school classes and I knew nothing about it. The film just captured me from the first seconds. Stewart brings Smith to life in this nearly perfect film. I’ve never seen it on the big screen and hope to this month!

  19. RABBI JOSEPH KOLAKOWSKI says:

Capra managed to make this a timeless classic.

  20. Bryan Varnell says:

Mr. Smith is a classic because of Jimmy Stewart. I want to see it on the big screen because I love movies!

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Bryan, unfortunately the contest ended on 9/29 but stay tuned because we give away movie tickets every month, as well as dvds, books and more 🙂
