About the Books:

A Real American Character: The Life of Walter Brennan: Walter Brennan (1894-1974) was one of the greatest character actors in Hollywood history. He won three Academy Awards and became a national icon starring as Grandpa in The Real McCoys. He appeared in over two hundred motion pictures and became the subject of a Norman Rockwell painting, which celebrated the actor’s unique role as the voice of the American Western. His life journey from Swampscott, Massachusetts, to Hollywood, to a twelve thousand-acre cattle ranch in Joseph, Oregon, is one of the great American stories. In the first biography of this epic figure, Carl Rollyson reveals Brennan’s consummate mastery of virtually every kind of role while playing against and often stealing scenes from such stars as Gary Cooper, Humphrey Bogart, and John Wayne. Rollyson fully explores Brennan’s work with Hollywood’s greatest directors, such as Howard Hawks, John Ford, and Fritz Lang. As a father and grandfather, Brennan instilled generations of his family with an outlook on the American Dream that remains a sustaining feature of their lives today. His conservative politics, which grew out of his New England upbringing and his devout Catholicism, receive meticulous attention and a balanced assessment in A Real American Character. Written with the full cooperation of the Brennan family and drawing on material in archives from every region of the United States, this new biography presents an artist and family man who lived and breathed an American idealism that made him the Real McCoy.

Marilyn Monroe: A Life of the Actress, Revised and Updated: In American popular culture, Marilyn Monroe(1926-1962) has evolved in stature from movie superstar to American icon. Monroe’s own understanding of her place in the American imagination and her effort to perfect her talent as an actress are explored with great sensitivity in Carl Rollyson’s engaging narrative. He shows how movies became crucial events in the shaping of Monroe’s identity. He regards her enduring gifts as a creative artist, discussing how her smaller roles in The Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve established the context for her career, while in-depth chapters on her more important roles in Bus Stop, Some Like It Hot, andThe Misfits provide the centerpiece of his examination of her life and career. Through extensive interviews with many of Monroe’s colleagues, close friends, and other biographers, and a careful rethinking of the literature written about her, Rollyson is able to describe her use of Method acting and her studies with Michael Chekhov and Lee Strasberg, head of the Actors’ Studio in New York. The author also analyzes several of Monroe’s own drawings, diary notes, and letters that have recently become available. With over thirty black and white photographs (some published for the first time), a new foreword, and a new afterword, this volume brings Rollyson’s 1986 book up to date. From this comprehensive, yet critically measured wealth of material, Rollyson offers a distinctive and insightful portrait of Marilyn Monroe, highlighted by new perspectives that depict the central importance of acting to the authentic aspects of her being.

  1. Carl says:

I’m not familiar with Brennan’s films but my favorite Monroe movie is The Misfits. I love the interaction between the co-stars and I really enjoy seeing Marilyn do more dramatic work instead of the comedy she’s so well known for. Thanks for a chance to win these great looking books.

  2. Sara Stewart says:

I love both! Marilyn was great at comedy and my favourite comedy she was in is How to Marry a Millionaire. However…her true talent and the true depth of what she could really do is seen in Don’t Bother t Knock.
My favourite Walter Brennan is Rio Bravo, with the Duke and Ricky Nelson

  3. Richard P. Fohrenbach says:

    Bus Stop

  4. Annmarie Gatti says:

Posting on behalf of Ashley… The Gnome Mobile (Walter Brennan)

  5. Dorothy Winnett says:

To Have and Have not is my favorite Walter Brennan movie, love Walter Brennan but add Bogie & Bacall wow movie magic ♥

  7. Lynette Charles says:

I love Marilyn Monroe. So many movies I love of Marilyn’s. If I have to pick one, it would be ” How to Marry a Millionaire”
I am only interested in winning Marilyn Monroe book, please don’t include me in the Walter Brennan draw.

  8. Lynette Charles says:

I love Marilyn Monroe. So many favourite movies of Marilyn, if I have to pick one, it would be, “How to Marry a Millionaire ”
Please only enter me into the Marilyn Monroe book draw.

  9. Chris Teel says:

    Walter Brennan: Goodbye, My Lady. I’d probably bawl if I watched it now. A close 2nd would be Rio Bravo;

Marilyn Monroe, The Seven Year Itch, hands down.

  10. Joan O'Malley says:

Love Walter in Meet John Doe and Marilyn in Seven Year Itch

  11. Christina Sharpe says:

My favourite Walter Brennan Movie is To Have and Have Not. He’s so good with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. He fits into that amazing movie so well. My favourite Marilyn Monroe movie would have to be Some Like it Hot. She’s so hilarious as Sugar. Everything about her in that film is spot on.

  12. Jess says:

My favorite movie by Marilyn Monroe is Some Like it Hot! I absolutely LOVE that movie!

  13. Amy Condit says:

My favorite Walter Brennan movie has to be “To Have and Have Not”. He and newcomer Lauren Bacall play so well off of each other!

As a die-hard lifelong Marilyn Monroe fan, my favorite film performance of hers has to be in “Bus Stop”. I know Marilyn herself was particularly proud of her role in “The Asphalt Jungle” (which is one of my favorite noir films), I really appreciate her showing off her Actor’s Studio skills in “Bus Stop.”

  14. I’m a fan of both Brennan and Monroe, with Walter Brennan’s role in The Westerner a particular favorite and he’s indelibly etched into my mind for his role on TV in The Real McCoys. Marilyn was larger than life and her legacy has still left us with questions about her death, with theories of murder and cover-up, but I choose to remember her in many of her film roles, including Some Like it Hot, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and I am fond of The Prince and the Showgirl.

  15. maria says:

Fave Marilyn movie is Gentleman Prefer Blondes

  16. My favorite Marilyn Monroe film, of the ones I’ve seen so far, would have to be “Some Like It Hot” (1959).

  17. beckie says:

    Some Like it Hot!

  18. Gordon says:

    The Seven Year Itch!

  19. Alexa blue says:

I’ve watched a lot of classic film, but mostly horror so I don’t believe I’ve seen any with either of these actors

  20. Christy Leonard says:

It is so hard to pick a favorite Marilyn Monroe movie, oh boy. For right now, I am leaning towards “The Prince and the Showgirl”. In my opinion, she acted Olivier off the screen. It helps having read the books regarding the backstories that went on as well, but when you see the finished product, you cannot take your eyes off of her.

  21. Lisa Adams says:

My favorite Walter Brennan movie is Meet John Doe. ‘Nothin’ but a lotta helots!’ My favorite Marilyn Monroe movie is Some Like It Hot. She is splendid alongside Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon.

  22. Rhonda says:

The delicious How To Marry a Milliomare,

  23. Darlene Dayle says:

Fan of both, but for Walter Brennan it’s MEET JOHN DOE
