  1. Robert Stein says:

I’m not a kid any more but when I first saw Bela Lugosi in “Dracula” (1931) on TV as a kid I was so sacred I had nightmares for several nights after. Those memories are so ingrained in me that the film would still give me the creeps. That really uncomfortable feeling is all due of course to Todd Browning directing Bela Lugosi in a performance that was eerily fit to the part of a vampire, but also due to Lugosi having perfected the character of Dracula when he played the same role on Broadway.

  2. Julie moon says:

Frankenstein’s monster, portrayed by Lon Chaney, is my favorite… he has the perfect mix of humanity and horror. He calls up so many different emotions throughout the film, and we feel so bad for him!

  3. My favorite would have to be the Frankenstein monster. Although I like Karloff’s performance the best, I love all the Frankenstein films, maybe because the monster is just trying to make his way in a life he never asked for.

  4. Randy says:

Claude Rains in the Invisible Man…loved how he wrapped himself and create havoc

  5. Patricia Pope says:

My husband and I have been fans of Abbott and Costello since we were children. My husband is also a fan of universal monsters as well particularly Frankenstein. We have all of the DVDs and evan the entire collection of Abbott and Costello movies. But this special collection would be the crowning jewel of our collection.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Patricia, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Could you please confirm that you tweeted, or let me know if you don’t have a twitter account, or if it’s private. Thanks so much 🙂

  6. Tim says:

    My favorite is Frankenstein.
    Hope I win!!

  7. Stuart Cook says:

My favorite movie monster is Boris Karloff as the Frankenstein monster. His makeup is incredible, as is his performance in the film.
I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  8. John Cooper says:

I really like Lon Chaney as the Wolf Man in ‘Meet Frankenstein’ he has his serious performance in that where you can see the despare and struggles with being the Wolf Man,but also his comic timing with Lou Costello in the locked room scene is brilliant and shows he has many acting talents.

  9. Richard Weatherford says:

    I love these film’s and guy’s

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Richard, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Could you please confirm that you tweeted, or let me know if you don’t have a twitter account, or if it’s private. Thanks so much 🙂

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Got your note. Thanks. you are officially entered. Good Luck 🙂

  10. Darrylyn Bonaparte says:

My favorite actor is Ricou Browning who played “The Creature from the Black Lagoon!” Although some may not consider The Creature a classic monster, I always did. His character was unique and very different from what we grew up knowing. I also had the pleasure in meeting him and having my photo taken with him at a MadMonster event. He was so humble, and dear to his fans. I learned that much of the time while he was being filmed underwater, he had little to no air supply. The setup was nothing like it is today, I give him a great deal of credit to endure such conditions in bringing horror to the silver screen for us all!

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Darrylyn, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Could you please confirm that you tweeted, or let me know if you don’t have a twitter account, or if it’s private. Thanks so much 🙂

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Got your note. Thanks! You are officially entered. Good Luck 🙂

  11. Chris Teel says:

Boris Karloff as The Mummy. You get so much of his storyline before he’s The Mummy, then you get the interaction with Zita Johann, but his pain at losing the first Pharaoh’s woman translates into his anger as The Mummy. It’s my favorite.

  12. Richard Rommeney says:

Who is your favorite Classic Movie Monster (or actor that portrays the monster) and why?
Of all the Classic Movie Monsters and the actors who portrayed them (and I love them all!), I would have to say that my favorite of them all is Lon Chaney, Jr. Besides being the son of the great “Man of a Thousand Faces” Lon Chaney, he was a fine actor in his own right. He not only created the role of Larry Talbot (The Wolfman), he was the only actor to portray that character. Plus, Lon, Jr was very versatile. He is the only actor to portray the “Big 4” – Wolfman, Dracula, The Mummy and Frankenstein’s Monster.

  13. Michael J. Hughes says:

I’ll nominate Henry Hull’s werewolf if only because it paved the way for those hairy heartthrobs directed by George Waggner, Joe Dante, and John Landis.

  14. Billy Slobin says:

This is the BEST time of the year! October is all classic horror, all the time!!
My favorite horror actor would have to be The Great Karloff (as he was credited in the original Frankenstein!)
Frankenstein’s Monster was capably played by Glenn Strange in this Abbott and Costello film and by Lon Chaney Junior in Ghost of Frankenstein 1942, by Bela Lugosi Frankenstein meets The Wolfman 1943 -all of which I loved.
Karloff’s portrayal of the monster in 1931’s Frankenstein, 1935 Bride of Frankenstein and 1939’s son of Frankenstein are to me the quintessential ones.
Karloff’s versatility was outstanding in The Black Cat, The Walking Dead, The Mummy, Scarface, The Ghoul, and The Man they could not hang and countless other films…His later appearance in The Grinch helped cap off an amazing career. Sorry for the long answer but I’m passionate about the topic 🙂

  15. Christopher Russo says:

Gonna have to say my favorite classic movie monster is the Frankenstein Monster, particularly the character as portrayed by Boris Karloff. He is a relatable character, being a creature who had no say in his creation and finds himself in unfortunate situations beyond his control. He’s almost a literary representation of humanity. My love for classic horror began because of my first viewing of Frankenstein on VHS and I gradually moved on to the other Universal horror flicks but that one still remains my favorite to this day. Hope to win this contest! 🙂

  16. Gee.Tough question but my favorite monster has to be James Arness in the thing from outer space- no dialogue so he had to act…… man what a monster smart, cunning and so menacing……

  17. Nancy says:

The original Dracula – Bela Lugosi – is a character I’ve always been fascinated with. The first movie, 1931’s Dracula, is so atmospheric, brooding and is the best kind of horror film – it leaves the graphic part of the horror to the viewer’s imagination (they don’t make movies like that anymore!). As frightening and threatening as Lugosi’s character.is in this film, he instills a bit of pathos into Dracula as well. The audience learns that Dracula is driven to his unspeakable acts by an unfortunate event that happened to him. He can’t control the force that drives him to commit his dark deeds. He is powerless. I find myself actually feeling sympathy for Dracula as he is pursued by Van Helsing in the end. What happened to Dracula wasn’t his fault. Bela Lugosi’s ability to create this pathos while portraying such an evil character is a credit to his acting ability. It is no wonder this role became the one Lugosi’ was identified with for the rest of his life.

  18. My favorite is Lon Chaney. When you think of all the characters he transformed into without CGI. He was truly amazing!

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Linda, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Could you please confirm that you tweeted, or let me know if you don’t have a twitter account, or if it’s private. Thanks so much 🙂

  19. Shelia Worthey says:

Boris Karloff of course. We only got to watch TV when we visited someone who had one. so since he was one of the most prolific and recognizable movie makers for a kid, he was the model.
LOVED all of the Abbott and Costello shows!!!
Would like to share with my son. They just don’t make good stuff anymore!!
Fortunately…. I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message. =)
    Thanks Classic Movies!!

  20. Annmarie Gatti says:

Entering on the behalf of Porter V: My favourite actor who portrays a Classic Movie Monster is Vincent Price, because he always played the monster characters with a bit of a wink and a twinkle in his eye. He didn’t seem to take himself too seriously. I like that attitude in an actress or actor.

  21. Howard B says:

He didn’t mean to be bad.

  22. Michael Kyes says:

    Bela Legosi as Dracula

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Michael, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Could you please confirm that you tweeted, or let me know if you don’t have a twitter account, or if it’s private. Thanks so much 🙂

  23. Christian Ramos says:

My favorite classic movie monster has to be the Creature from the Black Lagoon. The poor guy is just trying to get the people out of his home and it’s not his fault that he has to go hostile!! Also just a real fun film in general.

  24. Jean F says:

    Bela Lugosi as Count Dracula

  25. Rachel says:

One of my many favorites is Christopher Lee as Dracula!

  26. Madeleine says:

Elsa Lanchester as “The Bride of Frankenstein” is my favorite classic movie monster! I really loved the idea of a female “monster” growing up, and she’s still my favorite to this day!

  27. Lillian Wirick says:

Oh so hard to pick one favorite actor and one favorite movie monster because they’re all so fantastic. I’m choosing Boris Karloff as Frankenstein’s Monster because Frankenstein was the first classic horror movie I ever watched and I remember hiding my eyes under my blanket when he came alive and was revealed, that groan and the way his makeup was, the way he walked all quite disturbing but so brilliant.

  28. Vickie L Gleason says:

My favorite classic movie monster would be Boris Karloff as Frankenstein!!
    I love Halloween time!!

  29. Heather S says:

Hands down Frankenstein. I remember being petrified watching it for the first time!
    (@bohofoxbabe on Twitter)

  30. Christopher Manning says:

Bela Lugosi’s Dracula. The accent, the eyebrows, the smirk. You never quite knew what to expect: charming foreigner, kindly innkeeper, or savage monster? He towed the line perfectly between a creature of the night and a centuries old count as he went about seducing and destroying the lives of those around him. And Bela played the role note perfect to the point where you were never fully sure whether you should be rooting against the bloodsucker – or for him…

  31. Jacque says:

I like Lon Cheney as The Werewolf. He looks like such a nice actor in real life. I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  32. Jodi says:

My favorite used to be Bela Lugosi because his portrayal of Dracula is so smoldering and spot on! I still love Lugosi. However, that being said, I now prefer Boris Karloff. Yes, Frankenstein might be a monster but you just feel so sorry for him! Poor baby 😉 And that Bride of Frankenstein: look in the mirror, honey, LOL! Seriously love all the classic monsters…and I’m glad to see someone on here mentioning Vincent Price. Had a big crush on him when I was little…Yes, I was a weird kid, LOL! Lily Munster was my ideal version of beauty, kind of a goth Barbie, LOL! (But I digress)!

  33. Steve Wiandt says:

My favorite is Lon Chaney Jr. as the Wolf Man. He looks wild and cool and he’s got that whole good side / bad side thing going on. The devil inside.

  34. Tatiana Bustamante says:

Elsa Lanchester As Frankenstein’s Bride I always loved that character she was so beautiful and strong. I wish she had her own movie 🙂 or even starred in the Abbott and Costlello films that would have been fun!

  35. Liliana Radwanski says:

A Tie would be Vincent Price from the 1950’s Version of House of Wax.
He was so Evil. So Maniacal.
And the Scariest to meSpencer Tracy in the remake of Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde. His Transformation and the Visions he has torturing the 2 Women as Horses give you Chills.

  36. The Creature from the Black Lagoon. Was the first one I saw and the only one I have managed to ever see on the big screen.

  37. Frankenstein’s Monster because he’s so misunderstood as he tries to find his way in the world he did not create

  38. Michael Reed says:

The mummy (as portrayed by anybody) has always intrigued me. I think it is because of a fascination with ancient Egyptian culture. The Universal B-films of the early 40’s are my favorite, because the films take place in odd places (Cajun country? Really?), and portray a very slow-moving monster that somehow is able to catch and dispatch many innocent bystanders.

  39. Oh wow! This seems like a great set. My favorite movie monster is Lon Chaney Jr. as “The Wolf Man” ( aka poor Larry Talbot ). I always loved his look of surprise when he sees all that hair growing on his feet.

I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  40. Jeremy Russell says:

All the classic monsters are fantastic, but I think my favorite is probably the Bela Lugosi Dracula. It’s just so iconic and he pulled it off totally based on charisma. Nosferatu was scarier, Frankenstein had the most creative makeup and the Creature was unforgettably designed, but Dracula was cool. And every line delivered with panache. Love watching him do his stuff.

  41. Philip Johnson says:

Bela Lugosi as Dracula. Suave, exotic. Exuding charisma and charm. Similar to Gomez Addams. I feel often that when people play Dracula in films, plays, etc. they are doing their best Bela Lugosi impression, because he IS Dracula.

  42. My favorite monster has to be Bella Lagosi. He was such a dashing monster with great charisma and those hypnotic eyes. I love watching all his music movies. And that accent! So captivating. Please chose me

  43. Tom White says:

I think my favorite would have to be Lon Chaney Jr.’s Wolf Man. The reason is that he seems so human and unwilling. He’s genuinely distressed to be subject to a sickness that’s out of his control. Contributing to this is Chaney’s face itself. It’s given to a sad expression. He’s perfect. Red

  44. Linda says:

My favourite classic movie monster is Frankenstein’s monster played by Boris Karloff. I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  45. Kyle says:

My favorite classic monster is Frankenstein. My dad brought all the old movies home on VHS when I was a kid, and I enjoyed them then, but I read Mary Shelley’s novel when I was in college, and I got a deeper appreciation for the character and Shelley’s original lessons. The old Universal movies aren’t very faithful, but they’re still a lot of fun. 🙂

  46. JAMES J MCCORKELL JR says:

Lon Chnaey Jr. as The Werewolf is the most heartbreaking ‘monster’ in any of the classics…

  47. Tatiana Bustamante says:

The Invisible Man played by Claude Rains he is hilarious yet so insane! I don’t think anyone else could have played that role. For the film being very old the camera tricks and special effects are great even compared to new movies it still holds it own. I would really love the dvds hope I win!

  48. Mark PAGAN says:

I gotta go with Karloff’s Frankenstein – is there any portrayal of The Monster that doesn’t nod to the icon?

  49. Jim Criazzo says:

My favorite classic movie monster is Frankenstein’s monster as played by Boris Karloff.
Still scares the hell out of me.

  50. Richard Weatherford says:

man i would love to win this!

  51. Steven Filippi says:

Lon Chaney, Jr’s Wolf Man will always be my favorite of the classic Universal horror monsters. While I don’t believe he is the most iconic (which is unfortunate, but you have to give that status to Karloff’s Frankenstein or Legosi’s Dracula), but he is the most human, and Chaney was unparalleled in his ability to portray suffering on screen.

On a less serious note, the Wolf Man’s battle with Dracula at the end of Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein has always been my favorite scene in any of the Universal movies.
