THE WHALES OF AUGUST, Bette Davis, Lillian Gish, 1987
Bette Davis and Lillian Gish, The Whales of August

…..

About The Whales of August: Screen legends Bette Davis (All About Eve), Lillian Gish (Duel in the Sun) and Vincent Price (Tales of Terror) unite their iconic talents in this beautifully photographed, intensely emotional drama that offers unexpected and quite marvelous rewards. Libby (Davis) and Sarah (Gish) are widowed siblings who have vacationed for half a century at a seaside cottage in Maine. Now in their eighties, the sisters have unexpectedly arrived at an impasse: While Sarah embraces change and the possibility of romance with a courtly Russian suitor (Price), the stubbornly bitter Libby rages at the inevitability of death. As the summer months wane, can Libby and Sarah rediscover the powerful bonds of memory, family and love? The stellar cast includes Ann Sothern (A Letter to Three Wives) in her Oscar-nominated performance, Harry Carey Jr. (3 Godfathers), Mary Steenburgen (Melvin and Howard), Margaret Ladd (TV’s Falcon Crest) and Tisha Sterling (Coogan’s Bluff). The Whales of August features a wonderful screenplay by playwright David Berry (G.R. Point) based on his play and top-notch direction by the great Lindsay Anderson (O Lucky Man!, If….).

I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.
I’m doing a movie challenge in 2018 to watch all the 1980s movies that received Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominations. This is not an easy one to find so winning this would be fortuitous indeed!

  2. Vickie Gleason says:

I would love to win this DVD. I love Bette Davis but have never seen this movie! I look forward to seeing it!

  3. I’ve never seen the film, but I’m a big fan of director Lindsay Anderson, composer Alan Price, and actor Vincent Price, so I have long been curious to see it.

  4. David Hollingsworth says:

I would love to win this Blu-ray because it would get the chance to see Gish and Davis, two of the most legendary women in film history in the same film. I have also never seen the film.

  5. Nancy says:

I’d love to win this Blu-ray because I haven’t seen this film and it has a really amazing cast!

  6. bill norris says:

i love seeing movies ive never seen before.

  7. Javier Valverde says:

I want to win this Blu-Ray because I’ve never seen The Whales of August and I’ve heard it’s such a legendary film because it was the only film that Bette Davis and Lillian Gish ever made together. It would be amazing to see the symbol of the silent screen – Lillian Gish – act with the symbol of the sound screen – Bette Davis. It would make a dream come true to win this film.

  8. Gloria Anton says:

The reason this movie means so much to me is that over 30 years later, I still remembered it. I saw it when it was released in theaters in 1987. I’m a big Betty Davis fan via my mom, which brought in of course Anne Southerland and Vincent Price. On the big screen with the quality of the film the movie was not only amazing scenically but it’s script and the actors were beyond fabulous. Lillian Gish, silent movie star would have been just as big of a star in the “talkies” – at least I was convinced seeing her performance here. Now, I’m 20 years away from where these characters were in this movie and going through this with my own mother I identify with this movie on so many levels. I lost mom 4 years ago and sought out this film to purchase but there weren’t any “reputable” places to purchase, but was able to download it. It’s not blue ray quality, in fact on my HD it’s quite blurry film quality. But, the script and performances are well worth it and I’ve watched in twice in the last few years. This is a classic movie, in my opinion, and it’s their last movie. They did some of their best work in this film and I’d love to have this copy. It will be a treasured film in my collection. Thank you! Gloria Anton

  9. Mark Rodriguez Macias says:

I love Blu-Ray, I love the cast, I love this movie!

  10. Emma Stone says:

Lillian Gish is an actress I highly respect, being the biggest star of D.W. Griffith’s masterpieces. I haven’t seen a sound film of hers yet.

  11. Billy Slobin says:

I would love to win this blu-ray as I have never seen the film and absolutely adore all the legendary actors in it.
Bette Davis, Ann Sothern, Lilian Gish and Vincent Price are all so great!

  12. Sara Stewart says:

I love Bette Davis and have only seen part of this movie. She and Lillian Gish blew me away, and having two such powerful actresses from the golden age is a must see

  13. NeryCheryl Hall says:

I saw this movie once when I was younger. I am now closing in on the age of these 2 classic, flawless, actors, and would love to watch them over and over, as my health leaves me with less and less activities to enjoy. The warmth, the humor, the scenery, and their beautiful faces would lift my spirits. Thank you, Cheryl

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi, I haven’t seen your tweet yet. Please confirm that you tweeted — or just let me know by commenting back here if you don’t have a twitter account. Thanks!

  14. bill norris says:

i enjoy seeing new to me flics.

  15. David Wangberg says:

I want to win this so I can continue my goal of seeing 200+ new and old movies in a year.

  16. Casey Monroe says:

I would like to win this film simply because I call myself a huge fan of Vincent Price, and yet I’ve never heard of this film. I’m only familiar with his performances in horror films and I would love to see another side to a performer I enjoy!

  17. L.Co dy says:

I’m trying to complete my collection of Vincent Price movies.
