The Lost World 1925 film, dinosaur in front of building

…..

About the Release:  True to its title, the 1925, 10-reel version of The Lost World effectively disappeared from circulation in 1929 – all known positive prints destroyed – a move by First National Pictures to help clear the way for another “creature film” utilizing special effects and Willis O’Brien’s cutting-edge animation techniques: King Kong. For more than 80 years, only abridged editions of The Lost World remained in existence… until now! This visually stunning 2K restoration features newly-discovered scenes and special effect sequences, incorporating almost all original elements from archives and collections around the world. Renowned silent film composer Robert Israel contributes a new and ambitious score, performed by a full orchestra in 2016. Bonus materials include audio commentary from film historian Nicolas Ciccone, deleted scenes, and short films R.F.D., 10,000 B.C. (1917) and The Ghost of Slumber Mountain (1918), and more…

Synopsis: Follow Professor Challenger, played by the inimitable Wallace Beery, as he and a crew of curious explorers embark on an expedition in search of a mythical, prehistoric plateau in South America. Along for the adventure are eminent scientist Summerlee (Arthur Hoyt, the director’s brother), sportsman Sir John Roxton (Lewis Stone), journalist Ed Malone (Lloyd Hughes) and Paula White (Bessie Love), whose father disappeared on the same plateau. The party is not there long before the “lost world” of the jungle begins to reveal its secrets: a primitive ape-man, a Pterodactyl flying through the air, a massive Brontosaurus feeding upon the trees, the vicious Allosaurus, and many more monstrous beasts of the Jurassic age.

  1. Shelia says:

I confess. I have no idea or knowledge of this film but would like to see it. If for no other reason than to see what they did back then. I’m sure it will seem kind of quirky.
I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  2. Daniel G. says:

I would like to win this Blu-Ray to watch with my son. We both love Willis O’Brien’s special effects, Arthur Conan Doyle’s book, dinosaurs, and watching classic movies!!!

*I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  3. Stuart Cook says:

I had the opportunity to see an earlier restoration at the Cinefest 20+ years ago, and that was remarkable. Having it on this BluRay would be utterly fantastic—this is such a great movie with incredible work for 1925.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Oh you were so lucky to see it on The Big Screen! That must have been SOMETHING! Thanks so much for entering and Good Luck 🙂

  4. Joy Simmons says:

I believe I have seen the abridge version of this. You had me at the the visually stunning 2k restoration with added extras and orchestrations.Would love to see the longer adaption, well that’s it.

  5. Richard Leighton says:

Early Willis O’Brien effects, one of the first stop-motion pictures, groundbreaking science fiction – and I don’t own it!

  6. Nancy says:

I’d like to win this Blu-ray because I really enjoy stop motion animation and I’d love to see these early special effects.

  7. haven’t seen it yet, so would like to win the Blu-ray

  8. David Hollingsworth says:

To be honest, I have never seen the film, but I would love to see old-school special effects, where they care about what they were doing. Patience and dedication what’s put into it. And story and characters were taken seriously as well.

  9. I’d like to win the blu-ray for three reasons — 1) Willis O’Brien 2) The restoration video looked beautiful. 3) I can’t afford to purchase every Blu-ray that I review for bottomshelfmovies.com

  10. GeezerHatesYou says:

Haven’t seen this since I was a kid! Would love to get this bluray to finally revisit!

  11. Chris Teel says:

I haven’t seen this version. I would love to watch it and compare the effects to King Kong from a few years later. Plus dinosaurs.

  12. Ronald Oliver says:

Thanks for having the Lost World (1925) Blu-ray giveaway contest! I would love to be able to win a copy because I have never seen it before. I know it’s the original classic, so it would be great to be able to see it for the first time.

  13. GeezerHatesYou says:

Huh, not sure. My screen name is the same. It was retweeted by the Flicker Alley twitter account.

  14. Garrett Solomon says:

During my high school days, I was with this theater company in the Evanston area. One of the shows we did was actually a musical version of “The Lost World.” Looking back, I doubt it was the best show I helped out on. And sadly, I never got to make the friends that I hoped I would have. You could say that I was feeling alienated at the time, and you’d be right.

  15. Allison Francis says:

I would love to win this copy of Lost World because I am a collector of everything Bessie Love. I have seen this movie before and I really enjoyed it. **I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.***

  16. Chri5 M says:

I remember my father sitting me down and showing me THE LOST WORLD when I was a child obsessed with having my dinosaur figures fight each other in my backyard sandpit. At that age, I was awed – a feeling that would return when I saw JURASSIC PARK in the theaters. Watching these larger than life creatures on my home TV screen was captivating – I wanted to be Professor Challenger! To sail to new undiscovered worlds and watch these gargantuan beasts feed and fly and battle. I soon devoured every dinosaur book, movie, and cartoon and learned all the scientific names of each and every one of these prehistoric beasts. So, hearing that this will now be released and restored on Blu, I would love to come home to visit my father at Thanksivijg and have an after dinner screening of a movie that gives me such fond childhood memories with the man who made that possible.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

What a wonderful memory, and reason for wanting to win! Thank you so much for taking the time to share and Good Luck 🙂

  17. Sara Stewart says:

I’ve only seen parts of this movie but I am a HUGE dinosaur fan and love the older movies. People today think they look ridiculous and then I explain the patience and artwork it took to put into something like this. Moving something a fraction f hair at a time and taking a shot and continuing until they have the finished product. A far cry from today’s CG works, which are incredible, but these older films have the heart of the filmmakers firmly embedded in them.

  18. I would like to add The Lost World to my monster movie collection. I am proud of my collection of monster/horror movies from the classic era but The Lost World honestly seems like the missing piece! Owning this movie would add to the pleasure of having both it and King Kong, 2 peas in a pod. I am also very interested in the field of film restoration, so hearing that this project was in the works in the first place was quite exciting! To be honest, I’ve never seen this movie, The Lost World. Getting to own a proper restoration in Hi-def would be the perfect available occasion to see it for the very first time. A movie review of The Lost World might even make my blog, Peyton’s Classics, if I get to see it! 🙂

  20. Peter McBain says:

This is such a classic film and I haven’t seen it for years, can’t wait to see what sounds like an amazing restoration!

  21. Barry P. says:

I would love to win The Lost World because I’m a big fan of Willis O’Brien, Ray Harryhausen’s inspiration and mentor. Looking forward to seeing this on Blu-ray as well!

  22. Joseph Kolakowski says:

This is one of my favorite movies. I would love to see the entire thing.

  23. Sharon Cooper says:

I’ve been a fan of silent films since I was middle school age and I’m 60 now. I’ve never seen this film, and I’ve always wanted to. I have seen clips but never the entire movie, and I have several books about silent films that describe it so it’s always been near the top of my list of films to see that I’ve never been able to actually see. I would be thrilled to actually have a copy of it!

  24. I would like to win this DVD/Bluray because it was the first silent movie I ever wanted to watch. I was a little kid and I saw a clip and I knew I had to watch the whole thing. I love the film and this restoration sounds like a dream.

  25. Bharat says:

Would love to watch it given the unique story; never knew Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote dinosaur stories. Given the restoration work that has gone it, it would be interesting to listen to the bonus features.

  26. Tim says:

I am of the belief that some of the most magical, adventurous films of all time were the ones that involved Willis O’Brien’s famous stop-motion effects. When I read an adventure book, I picture the look and feel of a film like King Kong. I’ve had an interest in The Lost World (the book and the movie) and have been dying to watch this silent version. With this release, it’s the perfect time for me to experience such beyound this world adventure and escapism that helped make movies as glorious as they are.

  27. Cary Begole says:

I want to win because this is a great movie that I want to see again and again. Especially on bluray

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Cary, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Could you please confirm that you tweeted or let me know here if you don’t have a twitter account. Thanks!

  28. I’d like to win this bluray for this film was one of my earliest exposures to dinosaurs AND stop motion animation, two things which have fascinated me ever since.

I recall seeing scenes from this film in an Dinosaur Documentary I had on VHS as a kid that I watched constantly. Certain shots from it are still seared into my mind. So to be able to revisit those scenes as an adult, and see them in crystal clear bluray quality (as opposed to the inherent lofi look of VHS) would be glorious indeed!

  29. John Muller says:

I missed seeing THE LOST WORLD at this year’s San Francisco Silent Film Festival, so this Blu Ray would be the next best thing!

    …oh, and Willis OBrien rocks!

  30. Jonathan M says:

I’m a huge fan of silent era films. Chaplin and Keaton’s are my favorites. I haven’t yet seen this movie, but I would love the opportunity to do so.

  31. Christian Ramos says:

I would love to win this to watch with my friend. He’s getting into movies this year after pretty much not seeing a whole lot and I just want him to see something from a time where you can rarely find these early films on blu ray of any sorts! It would be great.

  32. Toby says:

I want to win this movie because I am new movie buff looking to beef up my collection and add some classics 🙂

  33. Jodi says:

I would like to win “The Lost World” because I’ve never seen it or heard of it. I love silent movies best of all films. Plus, my kids would love to see a dinosaur movie!!

  34. David Aibi says:

Would love to have this in my collection, so I can introduce it to my wife. She usually won’t watch older movies, but I think I can show her some film history with this wonderful movie!

  35. I would love to win this Blu-ray because of my fascination with the atistry of silent film and animation. King Kong is one of my favorite movies, and I would love to own an excellent transfer of the film that made it possible. I would be able to enjoy a classic film in the best quality possible, and learn more about the history of stop motion technology.

  36. Mike Drinkard says:

I’ve only seen stills of this movie and would love the chance to watch it. I’ve been a fan of silent films since the 70’s when my stepfather showed us Super 8 Laurel and Hardy films. This would be a wonderful edition to my growing collection of movies from the silent era.

  37. Kathy says:

I’d love to win this blu-ray since it was Willis O’Brien who not only got me started in my love of science fiction/fantasy (King Kong), but it was through one of his movies that I discovered Mystery Science Theater 3000 (The Black Scorpion).

  38. Rick Smith says:

I would love to add this to my collection of creature features on blu ray.
