About the Book: In The Life and Times of Mickey Rooney, authors Richard A. Lertzman and William J. Birnes present Mickey’s nearly century-long career within the context of America’s changing entertainment and social landscape. They chronicle his life story using little-known interviews with the star himself, his children, his former coauthor Roger Kahn, collaborator Arthur Marx, and costar Margaret O’Brien. This Old Hollywood biography presents Mickey Rooney from every angle, revealing the man Laurence Olivier once dubbed “the best there has ever been.”

  1. Carl says:

This looks like a cool book. I remember watching the Andy Hardy movies when I was a kid and those were fun but I think my favorite is the 1935 version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream where he played Puck. It’s one of my favorite plays too. Thanks for the chance to win.

  2. Vickie Gleason says:

My favorite Mickey Rooney movie would be Boys Town. However, I also loved National Velvet! My first Mickey movie I remember seeing was It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad World.

  3. Annmarie Gatti says:

Entering on behalf of Ashley that could not post: The Courtship of Andy Hardy.

  5. Bob Clifton says:

Wow, really, a favorite… Ok if I must, it may just be hie roll as Baby Face Nelson.

  6. Sara Stewart says:

Wow…this is hard. I loved the Andy hardy movies, and he was magnificent in Boys Town, but I think the performance that ALWAYS makes me smile is Santa Claus in “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” We didn’t have much growing up, so every year I would save any treats or desserts for when Rudolph and Santa Claus is Coming to Town came on.

  7. Joan O'Malley says:

Loved him in The Human Comedy. He has to be head of the house, juggle school and a job. It was so real and heartfelt.

  8. Rodolfo Ruiz says:

I remember watching Mickey Rooney’s made for TV Movie “Bill: On His Own” as a young boy and feeling very moved by his portrayal of Bill, a kind hearted individual with some sort of mental impediment who after many years of living in the company of friends is left to take care of himself. Mr. Rooney won the EMMY that year and boy did he deserve it. Truly a brilliant performance.

  9. Mickey’s contribution to “Little Lord Fauntleroy” is vastly underrated.

  10. Jennifer Jones says:

Requiem for a Heavyweight w/Gleason and Quinn. A wonderful role that he portrayed magnificently. Makes me appreciate all the musical and comedy movies he made all the more.

  11. Chris Teel says:

Ambush Alley, he has a cocky attitude and I remember how he keeps it up even when the enemy is closing in on him and he has no escape. I should say The Bridges at Toko Ri, my Dad was in the Korean War and it was one of his favorite films, but I’ll have to stick with Ambush Alley.

  12. It is very difficult to choose just one favorite from Mickey Rooney’s celebrated career. I guess I would have to go with Strike Up the Band because it also stars Judy Garland (as do many of my other favorites). The La Conga dance scene is so full of energy and fun to watch, and Mickey’s “dream” sequence, where he takes the fruits and cakes and turns them into an orchestra is really brilliant. He’s pretty talented on the drums too 🙂

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

I soooo agree… So many great roles — and so multi-talented! I remember seeing him playing the drums in that film, and couldn’t believe my eyes… so very talented, even as a young boy…

  13. Ellen Ciompi says:

There are so many great musicals he made that it would be easy to pick one of those, but I’ve always really loved his dramatic work. He was especially memorable in “The Human Comedy” and “National Velvet”, and of course “Boys Town” is terrific, but I have to single out his portrayal of Dan in “Captains Courageous” (1937). It adds so much to an already great film, and his interactions with both Barrymore and Tracy are wonderful. Rooney was SO talented, we are lucky to have such a trove of his performances.

  14. Bertha Hammond says:

It’s hard to pick just one movie but I guess it has to be the Andy Hardy movies.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Bertha, can’t find your tweet for some reason. Could you please confirm that you tweeted and/or re-send the tweet. If you don’t have a twitter account, then please just let me know here as well. Thanks!

  15. Laura Ashworth says:

My Favorite Rooney film is “Love Finds Andy Hardy.” Tweeted!

  16. benjamin ainsworth says:

My favorite Mickey Rooney film is Boys Town with Spencer Tracey. I think he displayed a more adult role with adult emotions and situations that required more of his acting skills and showcased his improvement as an actor. The subject matter was appropriate for the time and dealt with serious issues.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Benjamin, I don’t see your tweet… If you have twitter please don’t forget to tweet the entry message… And if you don’t have twitter, please let me know. Thanks!

  17. Patrick McCoy says:

What is one of your favorite Mickey Rooney movies and why?

I’d say Bous Town, I remember watching it once when I was young and just thinking it was a great movie!

    @mccoyer518

  18. Ilikeyourwork22 says:

Bill (1981) Even though a TV movie “Bill” really showcases his great acting abilities one of his best performances

  19. Rhonda says:

National Velvet Mickey Rooney !elizabeth Taylor .Thevtwo off them so young just perfect

  20. james robison says:

My favorite Mickey Rooney film would be, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. Not one dull moment. It wouldn’t have been the same.

  21. Cailin Rogers says:

I remember watching lots of old movies growing up because my grandmother loved them. One of our favourite actors was Mickey Rooney, and one of my favourite Christmas movies growing up was Santa Claus is Coming to Town. When I found out that Mickey played jolly old Santa, I loved it even more than when I was younger. So I’d say, although probably cliché, Santa Claus is Coming to Town is my favourite Mickey Rooney film because of all my fond memories of it cheering me up as a child.

  22. Sharri says:

My favorite Mickey Rooney is The Black Stallion 1979.

  23. It’s hard to pick just one since he had many great films and memorable parts. I love all his films with Judy Garland, I think they made a wonderful on-screen team. Their standout films (to me) being: Love Finds Andy Hardy, Girl Crazy and Babes on Broadway, the latter featuring one of my favorite musical numbers between the two: “How About You?”. That number is a prime example of their magical chemistry together.
When it comes to Rooney in his later career, I really liked The Black Stallion where he gives a touching Oscar nominated performance.
He has also done his share of voice over roles, my favorite being the severely underrated The Fox and the Hound. He brings so much to the character of Tod.
But my very favorite Mickey Rooney movie would probably have to be National Velvet. It’s a marvelous family film that can be watched over and over again. Mickey and a young Elizabeth Taylor (both great child stars) are perfectly teamed together and it’s just one of those movies that can always put a smile on your face. A real classic.

  24. My favorite Mickey Rooney movie is Boys Town. 🙂
