34 Responses to The Big Country 60th Anniversary Blu-Ray Giveaway (now-Aug 4)

  1. Jerome Moross’ score is a draw. When the movie is airing I tell the family I’ll just watch the opening to hear the music. They know better. The characters keep me glued to the screen. There seems to be something new to learn or understand about them with each viewing. Also, I wonder where Dorothy Adams disappeared to after her first scene. Was Wyler messing with me?

I was 11 in 1958 so just a shade too young to have seen this on release. I’d love to win a Blu-Ray of THE BIG COUNTRY as I’ve been catching up on missed classic westerns since taking an online class on the genre a couple of years back. Certainly the title itself concisely states one of the classic western themes: the vastness (and, implied or explicit, emptiness-ready-for-exploitation) of the Western United States and Territories.

  3. Fisher M.T says:

That it stays true to Donald Hamilton’s wonderful book for the most part. (In the book, Heston’s character is a villain, and that’s really the only place it strays.) Also, the outstanding cast.

  4. Javier Valverde says:

What I love about The Big Country is Burl Ives’ larger-than-life performance because it parallel’s his other big performance of 1958, as Big Daddy in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. I’m a big fan of his folk singing as well. I also love Jerome Moross’ beautiful score that exemplifies how Western scores should be: epic and full of grandeur.

  5. Vickie L Gleason says:

I have never seen this movie but I enjoy Westerns and this cast looks fantastic. I like Burl Ives and many others and would love to see this in it’s restored state.

  6. Stuart Cook says:

I have only seen this on TV in full-screen presentations, so it would be great to have this restored Blu-Ray copy. It has a grand cast, with the great Charles Bickford, one of my favorite actors.

  7. Cole Woolley says:

I haven’t seen this movie yet but I like westerns, my daughter likes Gregory Peck, and we have a Blu-ray player to watch it from. I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  8. Emma Stone says:

    >if you haven’t seen it, why do you want to win this Blu-ray?
It’s William Wyler, one of the greatest directors to ever live. An absolute essential.

  9. Chris Teel says:

I haven’t seen it but it stars Gregory Peck so even if it didn’t have a pedigreed cast and an outstanding score it would be worth watching for Peck alone.

  10. Todd Mason says:

I love the soundtrack, in its Holst-flavored sweep…about as good as a “classic” full-orchestra western score gets; and that it’s as a film such a deft metaphor for the destructive nature of the Cold War. The performances not too shabby, as well.

  11. bill norris says:

I have not seen it, but I’m always trying to expand my movie watching titles.

  12. Austin Baroudi says:

I haven’t seen it and I just love watching films! Thank you so much for the chance!

  13. Anthony Bejarano says:

I want to win this Blu-Ray because Gregory Peck is one of the actors I most love seeing in a movie, and then William Wyler is such an important voice in filmmaking, “Dodsworth” is one of my favorite movies of the 1930s, and even when he strikes out (“Roman Holiday,” IMO) it’s still interesting.

  14. Stuart Cook says:

I have only seen this on TV in full-screen presentations, so it would be great to have this restored Blu-Ray copy. It has a grand cast, with the great Charles Bickford, one of my favorite actors.

  15. Seth Naser says:

Lots to love about THE BIG COUNTRY: the score, the cinematography, the cast, but specifically, I think Burl Ives’ performance is outstanding. The first time I saw it, I gained a deeper appreciation for a man I’d previously only known from the “Rudolph” TV special and a few old music albums.

  17. Myke Emal says:

I’ve never seen the film, but would love this copy because it is listed in the book 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die, which is the basis for our podcast. A copy of the film is hard to come by in our part of the world, so it would be great to win this one.

  18. Valerie Mc Nulty says:

    God, I love old movies!

  19. Billy Slobin says:

The cast alone…most notably BURL IVES!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Dan Koskie says:

I’ve never seen it! Which answers both what I love about it and why I want to win it!!

I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  21. I only saw THE BIG COUNTRY once several years ago, so I only remember a few details, such as Gregory Peck navigating the Plains with a compass. However, I remember greatly enjoying it, and I would like to revisit it.

  22. Tim says:

Another classic that I would love to win! I have never seen this one!!!

  23. Jerry says:

It’s a beautiful, sprawling western epic, but my favorite part is Burl Ives. I love his performance. This is by far his most powerful and in depth role.

  24. Charles A. Prince says:

I have loved, deeply, this movie, aside from the performances,Charlton Heston in a minor role??!, it’s the music of Jerome Moross, now a lot including myself will say the that ElmerBernstein invoking score of the Magnificent Seven is the icon of western scores, but Mr. Moross delivers a truly passionate score along with the credits designed by Saul Bass, you can see and hear as the stagecoach is cutting across the Big Country as the wheels are turning and driving the movie right at the start, that is why I love The Big Country

  25. NOVIAN says:

I’ve never seen the film, but i will try to watch it

  26. Brent Butler says:

*** I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message. ***

There is no simple answer to why I love this film, but the primary reason has to be that it is a western hero who doesn’t carry a gun, and fires only one shot, into the dirt.

How do you encompass the rest?

The cast is superb, with the conflict between Peck and Heston vying for dominance with the conflict between Ives and Bickford.

Peck’s lack of a need to “prove his manhood” is a theme beyond all time. It is virtually unique.

    “Should I go on?” 😉

The score is majestic, no more so than what I consider no less than the best scene ever filmed in a western, as first Heston, then a trickle, and finally a stampede of riders comer around the bend to join Bickford in his assault on Blanco Canyon.

There is Conners, playing against type with the perfect portrayal of the bully who is really a sniveling coward.

The romance between Peck and Simmons, in the way it grows organically and explodes in the confrontation with Ives and Conners.

    “Old Thunder”. Priceless.

You might tell that I’ve had a deep love for this story and this movie for a LONG time. It inspired me to seek out the paperback, which was a rare case of the movie transcending the novel!

It’s hard for me to even think about this film without wanting to grab it and pop it into the player to watch it. I originally owned the DVD, which I passed on to my son when I got the 2011 Bluray. I only learned of this new edition a half-hour ago!

  27. Daniel M says:

haven’t seen it, want to watch with my dad who loves old movies.

I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:
