THE QUESTION:
Although “The Shining” is not a classic-era classic movie, many people do consider it a ‘new Hollywood’ classic. That said, what is it about this film that makes it stand out to you as ‘classic’? And, if you haven’t seen it, why do you want to see it on the Big Screen?

2) Then TWEET* (not DM) the following message:

About the film: From a script he co-adapted from the Stephen King novel, director Stanley Kubrick melds vivid performances, menacing settings, dreamlike tracking shots and shock after shock into a milestone macabre. In a signature role, Jack Nicholson (“Heeeere’s Johnny!”) plays Jack Torrance, who’s come to the elegant, isolated Overlook Hotel, as off-season caretaker with his wife (Shelley Duvall) and son (Danny Lloyd). Torrance has never been there before – or has he? The answer lies in a ghostly time warp of madness and murder.

IMPORTANT NOTE for all prizing: This is a special two-day-only event at select theaters nationwide on Sunday, October 23 and Wednesday, October 26 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. local time. Oh this is definitely October/Halloween. Another favorite thriller! I think what makes it so chilling is the isolation, the sheer madness, the uncontrollable, inescapable terror!! Seems everywhere you turn: hallway, maze, kitchen cabinet, room, there is something bizarre confronting, or worse, pursuing you! And it all started so innocently.

  2. Daniel G. says:

Stanly Kubrick had an uncanny way with taking a genre, personalizing it, and then transcending it. When it comes to the horror genre, Kubrick nailed it. I think the only person that would disagree with that sentiment would be Stephen King.
I am most looking forward to sharing this movie experience with my son, who has not yet seen it.

Such a scary and suspenseful film! Will probably be very intense on the Big Screen. Thanks for entering and Good Luck 🙂

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Daniel, Yay! Congratulations! You’re one of our eight winners! Just emailed you… please let me know if you don’t receive it. Thanks!

  3. Hi! I haven’t seen The Shining yet, but I’m turning 30 in November and I made a list of 30 films to watch before my birthday, mostly ones that are considered modern classics or “must-see” movies that have somehow eluded me until now. It would be so cool to get to see this for the first time on the big screen!

  4. Adam V says:

I would say that The Shining is a little late to be considered “New Hollywood” but I guess that comes down to personal definition. Personally, I love The Shining because a) I love Kubrick and b) it works as a horror film not because it’s scary, but because it’s creepy and disturbing. In my opinion, the latter works better when it comes to horror rather than full-on scares because it involves creating a horrifying atmosphere and a more satisfying payoff in the long run. The Shining is easily my favorite horror film.

  5. Sara Stewart says:

I think the fact that it can still terrify you. The massive amount of horror movies with all of their CG effects, cannot hold a candle to this movie. Jack Nicholson is terrifying and to see the way his humanity is stripped away by the spirits there, is unnerving. Seeing Shelley Duvall find her strength after being the meek little housewife is incredible, but the most frightening performance comes from Danny Lloyd.

  6. Michael Collins says:

I’m a huge Stephen King fan and Kubrick took his book and made a movie better than the book. Incredible performances from Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. One of the few Kubrick films I haven’t seen on the big screen.

  7. Sarah Packard says:

I need to see this on the big screen because I’ve actually never ever seen it, and am embarrassed to admit that!! 🙂 Also, I actually really loved the book when I read it as a teenager (and Stephen King in general), so I’m curious to see how it translates to film!

  8. Bharat Dhanireddy says:

Jack Nicholson acting masterclass will amazing to watch on the big screen.

  9. Jason S says:

The imagery is unmistakable. You could take a freeze frame at any point in the movie and any movie buff could tell you what it is from. That is the definition of iconic.

  10. Greg Bryant says:

It’s a classic because Stanley was one of the great masters of 20th century film. I find it hard for him to have ever made a bad movie. Jack Nicholson has one of the great screen going crazy roles. Kubrick’s endless tracking shots following Danny around the hotel on his big wheel. And the fact that The Shining is so definitely convoluted – I still don’t get the ending. But that doesn’t matter. That’s part of the greatness of this film.

I saw this when it was originally released, but the opportunity to see it again on the big screen is one I wouldn’t pass up.

  11. Sally says:

I think it is being recognized as a classic now because it is unlike the horror movies they put out currently. No bumps, creaks, or screams like traditional horror trappings, but instead intrigue with the hotel isolation and dysfunctional family portrayed. The reason I want to see it on the big screen is two fold, one is to see Jack’s facial expressions that are non copyable and secondly I haven’t been in a theater in a decade as the new released movies these days can intrigue me to leave the house to see them and leave the home theater…but “The Shining” sure could do it!

  12. Shannon Farrar says:

I have always stayed away from scary movies, including the Shining, because I usually end up with night upon night of nightmares. Halloween is my favorite holiday and what better way to enjoy it than seeing a scary movie on the big screen. There is no better way to fully enjoy the emotion and suspense of a movie like this than to see it larger than life with theater sound. I only hope my popcorn doesn’t go flying through the air!! Bring on the nightmares!!!

  13. Travis Warren says:

The Shining is in my top ten favorite films of all time, and Stanley Kubrick is one of my top ten favorite directors of all time. It was the first horror film that I loved. I have seen the film countless times. The film is very effective because it’s about the fact that someone you love can hurt you. The cast is perfect. The cinematography is some of the best that I ever seen. The film continues to disturb and unnerve thirty-six years after it’s release.

Hi Travis, Congratulations! You’re one of our winners! I just emailed you — if you don’t get the email, please let me know asap. Thanks!

  14. Al says:

Classic scary! Classic star – Jack Nicholson! Classic writer – Stephen King! Classic director – Stanley Kubrick! And now, as grandparent to 2 sets of twins – classic twin scene: “Come play with us, *Grandpa*. Forever… and ever… and ever.”

  15. Victor Diaz says:

I have seen the remake of this film not the original and would love not only to compare and contrast but see it as it was intended, on the big screen.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

I haven’t seen it on the Big Screen, but I’m sure it would have been spectacular! Sorry, but this particular contest has already ended 🙂 but please stay tuned because we run a few contests every month!
