Thanks to University of Texas Press for this clip of author Lauren Rebecca Sklaroff talking about Sophie Tucker and her non-traditional body image:

…..

About the Book: The “First Lady of Show Business” and the “Last of the Red Hot Mamas,” Sophie Tucker was a star in vaudeville, radio, film, and television. A gutsy, song-belting stage performer, she entertained audiences for sixty years and inspired a host of younger women, including Judy Garland, Carol Channing, and Bette Midler. Tucker was a woman who defied traditional expectations and achieved success on her own terms, becoming the first female president of the American Federation of Actors and winning many other honors usually bestowed on men. Dedicated to social justice, she advocated for African Americans in the entertainment industry and cultivated friendships with leading black activists and performers. Tucker was also one of the most generous philanthropists in show business, raising over four million dollars for the religious and racial causes she held dear. Drawing from the hundreds of scrapbooks Tucker compiled, Red Hot Mama presents a compelling biography of this larger-than-life performer. Lauren Rebecca Sklaroff tells an engrossing story of how a daughter of Russian Jewish immigrants set her sights on becoming one of the most formidable women in show business and achieved her version of the American dream. More than most of her contemporaries, Tucker understood how to keep her act fresh, to change branding when audiences grew tired and, most importantly, how to connect with her fans, the press, and entertainment moguls. Both deservedly famous and unjustly forgotten today, Tucker stands out as an exemplar of the immigrant experience and a trailblazer for women in the entertainment industry.

  1. Billy Slobin says:

I love vaudeville…particularly this era and yiddesha humor song and dance!

  2. Robert Stein says:

Sophie Tucker was a hot Yiddisheh Mama who was willing to learn to adapt to the times. I believe she even took lessons from Ethel Waters so as to perform in a more modern singing style. That’s the kind of person and entertainer who deserves a full length biography and that’s why I want to read it.

  3. I love Sophie Tucker for her risqué performances. She’s of the same background as me (Ukrainian Jewish heritage), and I study Vaudeville and early women film pioneers. I’d love to learn more about Ms Kalish!

  4. Javier Valverde says:

I’m not familiar with Sophie Tucker although I have heard of her career in vaudeville and radio. I want to win this book because I would like to know more about the vaudeville era in the early 2oth Century and her influence in it.

  5. Lina Jackson says:

I am a huge fan of classic films, especially when they are starring a strong female, like Sophie Tucker. I’m very excited to learn all about her trailblazing life in this book!

  6. Javier Valverde says:

I’m not familiar with Sophie Tucker’s work but I’m familiar with Sophie Tucker since I’ve heard about her thru Hollywood historical anecdotes. I want to win this book because I want to learn more about her contributions to Broadway and radio.

  7. I have always loved Sophie Tucker and enjoy listening to her recordings. I even went to see a cabaret show of a performer impersonating her just to try to get a sense of what it might have been like to see her in person. I also get a huge kick out of Roxie Hart’s ambition in the film Chicago (2002) to be as big a star as Sophie Tucker. A lot of people today don’t realize what a huge star she was, and that one line gives her a bit of her own back to modern audiences. I’d love to win this book.

  8. Chris Michael Ward says:

Sophie Tucker had talent! She sang great songs, and was a great talent!
She was big before I was born, so I would love to read this book.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Chris, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Please tweet the qualifying message or just let me know here if you don’t have a twitter account. Thanks!

  9. I LOVE Sophie Tucker! I love the early films she did with Judy Garland and I love the stories that Carol Channing shared about Sophie:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EtpK1jzz4E. I love Sharon McNight’s tribute to Sophie Tucker:https://youtu.be/EHHVKBy2_w0. I loved the book that Susan and Lloyd Ecker wrote and their documentary:https://youtu.be/NyUlZm4O4yE and, of course, the Bette Midler jokes: https://youtu.be/eTcFIchjotM

Last, but certainly not least, I want to interview Lauren Rebecca Sklaroff! Check out RichardSkipper.blogspot.com and RichardSkipper.com

  13. Jodi says:

Sophie was a brave strong, stylish lady. I love her attitude and would love to learn more about her life.

  14. Kelly Yockman says:

When I was a senior in high school, her songs “Oh You Have No Idea” and “I Dont Want To Get Thin” were like my ANTHEMS. Her voice traveled, and I’d get asked a lot why I would listen to her. Of course, because she’s a woman with a beautiful voice and body positive tunes, especially for that time period.

  15. I love Sophie Tucker because she reminds me of my grandmother, who used to say, “Who do you think you are, Sophie Tucker?” whenever she thought we were getting too demanding. Come to think of it, Grandma also looked like Sophie!

  16. Vickie L Gleason says:

I am not familiar with Sophie Tucker but would love to learn more about her trailblazing career!
