  1. Cristen Golias says:

My favorite Orson Welles performance is in The Lady From Shanghai. The whole performance is perfect from beginning to end, however, my favorite scene is the one at the “picnic” where Michael tells the story of the sharks and the feeding frenzy, which parallels the entire movie.
“Do you know, once off the hump of Brazil, I saw the ocean so darkened with blood it was black, and the sun fadin’ away over the lip of the sky. We put in at Fortaleza. A few of us had lines out for a bit of idle fishin’. It was me had the first strike. A shark it was, and then there was another, and another shark again, till all about the sea was made of sharks, and more sharks still, and the water tall. My shark had torn himself from the hook, and the scent, or maybe the stain it was, and him bleedin’ his life away, drove the rest of ’em mad. Then the beasts took to eatin’ each other; in their frenzy, they ate at themselves. You could feel the lust and murder like a wind stingin’ your eyes. And you could smell the death reeking up out of the sea. I never saw anything worse until this little picnic tonight. And you know, there wasn’t one of them sharks in the whole crazy pack that survived.”

      Thanks!

I already responded twice by email with my home address. Maybe you need to check your junk mail?

        • Annmarie Gatti says:

Sorry about that Cristen. And thank you for taking the time to send me a 2nd email. All is good now! 🙂

  2. Carl says:

I can’t get away from Citizen Kane, such a tour-de-force. Although I would like to see his interpretations of Shakespeare’s works in The Merchant of Venice, Othello, and Macbeth. Thanks.

  3. Carl says:

BTW – I don’t see the second part of the contest entry in the blog post. Is there a retweet you’d like us to send?

  4. Brad says:

For performance I would say Citizen Kane. Overall film I would go with Lady from Shanghai. I like Rita.

  5. Richard Hecht says:

Hank Quinlan in Touch of Evil
    “Vargas!”
    Great performance

  6. dave roller says:

Best preformance – The Third Man – greatest entrance an actor could want plus the ferris wheel scene- unbeatable

  7. My favorite Welles performance is his portrayal of Rochester in the film and radio adaptations of Jane Eyre. He is the perfect incarnation of a brooding Bronte-created gentleman.

  8. Gail says:

My favorite is Harry Lime in The Third Man. Just thinking about his performance makes me want to watch it again.

  9. Definitely his performance as Harry Lime in The Third Man. I can’t seem to get the images out of my mind: the smirking face that screams mischief, running through the sewers of Vienna, the long range shot of approaching Martins at the Ferris wheel. The brilliance of revealing him throughout the movie via sudden light or entrance via back doors/sewers is why I love movies. Kane is great, but Lime pulls at me very strongly.
