About the Book: In the first comprehensive biography of this colorful performer, Allan R. Ellenberger illuminates Hopkins’s fascinating life and legacy. Her freewheeling film career was exceptional in studio-era Hollywood, and she managed to establish herself as a top star at Paramount, RKO, Goldwyn, and Warner Bros. Over the course of five decades, Hopkins appeared in thirty-six films, forty stage plays, and countless radio programs. Later, she emerged as a pioneer of TV drama. Ellenberger also explores Hopkins’s private life, including her relationships with such intellectuals as Theodore Dreiser, Dorothy Parker, Gertrude Stein, and Tennessee Williams. Although she was never blacklisted for her suspected Communist leanings, her association with these freethinkers and her involvement with certain political organizations led the FBI to keep a file on her for nearly forty years. This skillful biography treats readers to the intriguing stories and controversies surrounding Hopkins and her career, but also looks beyond her Hollywood persona to explore the star as an uncompromising artist. The result is an entertaining portrait of a brilliant yet under-appreciated performer.

  1. Bruce Baldwin says:

All I really know about Mirian Hopkins is that she overreacted in “Old Acquaintance” opposite Bette Davis, with whom she had an ongoing feud. Why she overreacted is more understandable than why she feuded with the powerhouse Davis, but I would like to know more.

  2. Vickie Gleason says:

I am not very familiar with Miriam Hopins and her films and would love to win this book to learn more about her.

  3. Carl says:

Well, if I may be utterly shallow for a moment, just look at that cover photo. She was absolutely gorgeous. Honestly, she must have had guys following her around like puppies. Thanks.

  4. Shawn Moore says:

Hopkins conveys a subtle awareness of her sultriness behind calm control in many of her roles. A wanton sexuality behind that china-doll appearance. My favorites of her performances are The Story of Temple Drake, Trouble in Paradise, and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde.

  5. Gloria Elizabeth says:

The only movies I’ve seen Hopkins in are THE OLD MAID and THE HEIRESS, which, although she was excellent in them, are not the films to make a viewer fall in love. However, the brief biography above so intrigued me that I checked out her filmography and have requested TROUBLE IN PARADISE and DESIGN FOR LIVING from my local library. I love biographies that explode the stereotype of empty-headed bimbos.

  6. Javier Valverde says:

What I love most about Miriam Hopkins is that she was very versatile actress. I liked her in Trouble in Paradise (1932) because it’s different than the part she did in the risqué Design for Living (1933). I also love that she had interesting background growing up and that she knew a lot of intellectuals in Hollywood. I would like to know more about her life if I win this book.

  7. From what little I know about Miriam Hopkins, she sounds like a real ball-buster. Anyone who can go at it with Bette Davis has to be either gutsy or stupid and Hopkins wasn’t stupid. She certainly was feisty though and from what I hear could be a bit difficult to work with. I’m so excited someone finally wrote her biography.

  8. Laura A. says:

What I like about Hopkins is how her characters aren’t afraid to take control of their life. Also her speaking voice 🙂

  9. Stuart Cook says:

Miriam Hopkins was a unique yet underrated actress who brought greatness to her characters in DR. JEKYLL AND MR. HYDE and BECKY SHARP. I would love to read about her life and career to learn more about her.

  10. Jeanelle S Kleveland says:

I have seen a number of Miriam Hopkins films. My personal favorites would include The Heiress and the Old Maid. They are part of my spinster favorites. She plays an important role in both films. I would love to know more about her personally.
