About the Book: From her first appearances on the stage and screen, Maureen O’Hara commanded attention with her striking beauty, radiant red hair, and impassioned portrayals of spirited heroines. Maureen O’Hara is the first book-length biography of the screen legend hailed as the “Queen of Technicolor.” Following the star from her childhood in Dublin to the height of fame in Hollywood, film critic Aubrey Malone draws on new information from the Irish Film Institute, production notes from films, and details from historical film journals, newspapers, and fan magazines. Malone also examines the actress’s friendship with frequent costar John Wayne and her relationship with director John Ford, and he addresses the hotly debated question of whether the screen siren was a feminist or antifeminist figure. This breakthrough biography offers the first look at the woman behind the larger-than-life persona, sorting through the myths to present a balanced assessment of one of the greatest stars of the silver screen.

32 Responses to Maureen O’Hara: The Biography – Book Giveaway (Sept)

  1. Kevin Garnier says:

I love her in Hunchback. Her first. She does have so many great films; Quiet Man, Rio Grande, etc. But Hunchback is my favorite.

  2. Parent Trap is probably my favorite. As beautiful as JoAnna Barnes is, what the heck was Brian Keith thinking? Maureen was the entire package!!

  3. Bob says:

Trick question! 😉 I mean, how can one choose a favorite Maureen O’Hara film out of such a wealth of films? Eenie meenie minie mo. I’ll go with “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” (1939). I’ve loved that movie long before I knew/realized that it was Ms. O’Hara who played the part of Esmeralda (or even who Charles Laughton was, for that matter). The Hunchback is a film that I can’t stop watching once I start. And Ms. O’Hara is a big part of that. (I can’t think of any Maureen O’Hara films that I don’t love her in).

    • Marie Lorizio says:

So strong and beautiful in Sinbad, the Sailor. Alongside elegant Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and tough exotic Anthony Quinn, the threesome took us to a magic escape of a pirate movie. Such a great cast.

  4. Bruce Baldwin says:

I loved Maureen O’Hara in “The Quiet Man.” she played he-man to John Wayne’s demure, docile character. Great casting, great script, beautiful scenery!

  5. M.T. Fisher says:

THE LONG GRAY LINE. It’s sentimental Ford at its best, and a wonderful love story between Martin Maher and West Point. I think it’s one of Maureen O’Hara’s best roles, as she gets to display her Irishness to the hilt. It’s also a great love story between the Mahers. I don’t care if I am a fifty-six year old male. I tear up every time I watch it, and am not ashamed to say so.

  6. Billy Slobin says:

I have loved Maureen O’ Hara since I first saw her in Miracle on 34th Street when I was 8.
Her performances in Hunchback , The Quiet Man, Rio Grande are all great favorites of mine among countless others! Would really love love to read more about this epic and iconic legend of the screen!

  7. McClintock with john Wayne, because one minute, she’s mad at john Wayne’s character, next minute she’s try to be friends with him, she just played her character do well in that film

  8. Carl says:

I must admit I’m not terribly familiar with O’Hara’s body of work. I’d love to know more about her life and the private person that she was. Thanks for the chance to win a copy.

  9. Jamie S says:

Oh she’s such a talented actress! But I think my favorite movie of hers is the parent trap. I love her character, and how she gets back together with her husband in the end. I love the set up when she sends his fiancé camping, knowing it won’t go well for the fiancé. So funny.
I do not have a twitter account so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  10. Stuart Cook says:

Maureen O’Hara … so fittingly awesome in THE QUIET MAN. She was the classic Irish lassie for John Wayne; their scenes together in this are unforgettable!
I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  11. Jerry Stewart says:

I have always loved the movie The Quiet Man. There is a museum of John Wayne in Winterset Iowa, at the museum is the cart that they used during the movie with John Wayne and Maureen O’Hara were courting one another. I made the trip better just to see that cart!

  12. ludwig jacobson says:

I do not have a Twitter account so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message. I am 80 years old now and in my time I witnessed the movies’ golden age. I was exposed to beautiful and professionally made films including movies that starred the beauteous ms. Maureen O’Hara. I am not playing favorites but i enjoyed watching western films and Maureen O’Hara is often cast in cowboy films opposite JOHN Wayne. I like McLintock best. Their chemistry spells hit at the boxoffice. I would love very much to own her “biography” book in order for me to know more about the movie star I deeply admire. Just entered to win the “MAUREEN O’HARA: THE BIOGRAPHY” #BookGiveAway courtesy of Kentucky Press and @ Classic Movie Hub.

  13. Vickie Gleason says:

Maureen O’Hara has long been one of my all time favorite actresses. I know I have not seen all her work but I never pass up a chance to see her movies.
I even named my daughter Maureen after her! I was fortunate that I could take my Maureen to see Maureen O’Hara in person in Iowa several years back.
It’s really hard to pick a very favorite but two of my go to movies for a laugh or pick me up is The Parent Trap or McLintock! Love them both.
Of course, The Quiet Man, Hunchback, The Spanish Main, Miracle on 34th Street, Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation, Spencer’s Mountain and Sitting Pretty are also all favorites!
I would love a copy of this book!

  14. reenie m pascale says:

would love to win a copy

  15. Henry Rivera says:

Miracle On 34th Street. Not only is it the perfect holiday movie, but Ms O’Hara is on point as the skeptical single mother who learns to believe.

  16. Laura A. says:

Tough question! I’m going to go with “Rio Grande” (1950). Her first film with the Duke yet you feel like they really were married. Her longing for him yet trying not to get hurt again when he chooses duty first.

  17. My favorite, The Quiet Man.
Ms. O’Hara with John Wayne couldn’t get any better.
I was lucky enough to see her at TCM film Fest. Will always remember
    The great lady.

  18. Brittaney B says:

Hmm…tough choice. But I think I have to go with McClintock! When she gets involved in that mud fight with the men, I laugh every time. She has such great rapport not only with John Wayne, but the actors in supporting roles.

I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  19. Marie Lorizio says:

Maureen OHara – in The Quiet Man. with John Wayne – filmed in gorgeous Ireland. Irish-American cAST.

  20. Shannon Semler says:

Against All Flags Queen of Swashbucklers co starring with the King Errol Flynn ending the great cycle Black Swan with Tyrone Power, Spanish Main with Paul Henreid and Sinbad the Sailor with Fairbanks Jr what a run

  21. Dobrawa Gawecka says:

The Quiet Man for me. Maureen played herself in that movie. A fiery, beautiful Irishwoman who fends for herself and has her own opinions. She was a perfect march for John Wayne’s character. What a wonderful story. And what did she whisper in Sean’s ear at the end of the movie? We’ll never know…

  22. Brad Harju says:

My favorite Maureen O’Hara movie is Only the Lonely With John Candy. It was her last theatrical film but it’s great. She plays John Candys mother and Anthony Quinn plays a love interest. Check it out. You’ll be glad you did.

  23. How Green Was My Valley. It showed her strength, her resolve, her vulnerability. One of her best roles, in my opinion

  24. Mark PAGAN says:

Susan! I speak French, that does not make me Joan of Arc!
No quotes, as I’m working from memory and may not have it quite right.. but Miracle, certainly! Big nod to Quiet Man as well, and I’d forgotten about Parent Trap!

  25. Carl Cooper says:

I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message. I have to admit, it’s hard to pick just one favorite…but here are the ones I love the best: “Dance Girl, Dance”, “Miracle on 34th Street”, “How Green Was My Valley”, “The Black Swan” and “The Parent Trap”.

  26. RD says:

    Hunchback of Notre Dame

  27. My favorite Maureen O’Hara performance is in The Quiet Man. I love how determined and confident she is in the film! Also, just about every scene with her is gorgeously shot.

  28. Paul Bucalo says:

“The Quiet Man” would have to be (in my mind) the best, most memorable performance. Her emotional extremes, fiery, quick temper, and her deep passion (once her armor has been broken through and she’s let you in) depicting the iconic Irish woman of the time. I’ve never seen a movie she starred in that I didn’t want to fall in love with all over again.

  29. Randy Jones says:

I love her in Miracle on 34th Street, because it’s my favorite Christmas movie of all time.

  30. OraJean DeMars says:

She was wonderful and her and John Wayne were great friends and she was Beautiful and a great actress!

  31. Leslie Heavingham says:

Oh my…she is one of my favorite actresses! Very hard to pick just one. But..I would have to say… McClintock. She was wonderful in anything. But her in a comedic role, was pure joy! She and John Wayne had great chemistry too! Loved her! 😊💞
