…..

Since You Went Away: Blu-Ray or DVD available. Restored Roadshow Edition! This heartwarming and soul-stirring portrait of life on the homefront during World War II is a magnificent picture that is rich in humor and poignant with heartbreak. Claudette Colbert (Midnight) heads an all-star cast, including Jennifer Jones (Portrait of Jennie), Joseph Cotten (The Farmer’s Daughter), Shirley Temple (I’ll Be Seeing You), Monty Woolley (The Bishop’s Wife), Lionel Barrymore (Duel in the Sun), Robert Walker (Strangers on a Train), Agnes Moorehead (Citizen Kane) and Hattie McDaniel (Gone with the Wind), in this beautifully produced David O. Selznick (The Paradine Case) picture that tugs at your heart. With her husband Tim off to war, Anne Hilton (Colbert) struggles to be a pillar of strength for her daughters Jane (Jones) and Bridget (Temple). During America’s darkest hours, she bravely steers her girls through heartbreak and hardships as she eagerly awaits news from overseas and wonders if life will ever be the same. Wonderfully directed by John Cromwell (Made for Each Other) and beautifully shot by Stanley Cortez (The Night of the Hunter) and Lee Garmes (Shanghai Express). This masterpiece was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Actress (Colbert), Supporting Actress (Jones), Supporting Actor (Woolley), Best Cinematography (Cortez and Garmes) and winner of Best Score by Max Steiner (Casablanca).

I’ll Be Seeing You:  Blu-Ray or DVD available. Hollywood greats Ginger Rogers (Swing Time), Joseph Cotten (The Third Man) and Shirley Temple (Since You Went Away) top a stellar cast in this tender wartime love story about two troubled strangers who long for a normal life, meet by chance and try to crowd a lifetime of love and laughter into eight days. Studded with brilliant performances, I’ll Be Seeing You manages to ambush your emotions and hasten your heartbeats. After serving half of a prison sentence for accidental manslaughter, Mary Marshall (Rogers) is allowed a holiday furlough to visit her family. Keeping her history a secret, she falls in love with a kindhearted G.I. (Cotten) who’s struggling to overcome post-traumatic stress disorder. This David O. Selznick (Duel in the Sun) holiday classic features stunning cinematography by Tony Gaudio (The Adventures of Robin Hood) in glorious black-and-white and wonderful direction by William Dieterle (Portrait of Jennie).

The Whales of August:  Blu-Ray or DVD available. Screen legends Bette Davis (All About Eve), Lillian Gish (Duel in the Sun) and Vincent Price (Tales of Terror) unite their iconic talents in this beautifully photographed, intensely emotional drama that offers unexpected and quite marvelous rewards. Libby (Davis) and Sarah (Gish) are widowed siblings who have vacationed for half a century at a seaside cottage in Maine. Now in their eighties, the sisters have unexpectedly arrived at an impasse: While Sarah embraces change and the possibility of romance with a courtly Russian suitor (Price), the stubbornly bitter Libby rages at the inevitability of death. As the summer months wane, can Libby and Sarah rediscover the powerful bonds of memory, family and love? The stellar cast includes Ann Sothern (A Letter to Three Wives) in her Oscar-nominated performance, Harry Carey Jr. (3 Godfathers), Mary Steenburgen (Melvin and Howard), Margaret Ladd (TV’s Falcon Crest) and Tisha Sterling (Coogan’s Bluff). The Whales of August features a wonderful screenplay by playwright David Berry (G.R. Point) based on his play and top-notch direction by the great Lindsay Anderson (O Lucky Man!, If….).

Driftwood:  Blu-Ray or DVD available. Brand New HD Master from a 4K Scan. The Magic of eight-year-old Jenny (Natalie Wood, Marjorie Morningstar) comes alive in this spirited, funny and immensely charming story of a lost orphan girl’s effects on the townspeople who find her. After witnessing a small plane crash, a frightened Jenny seeks comfort in the home of a small-town doctor (Dean Jagger, Rawhide). Like a whirlwind of truth, Jenny speaks her mind, questions everything and changes the lives and loves of everyone she meets until she’s stricken with a plague that threatens the whole town. Now, the Doc must discover a cure or lose her. Driftwood was produced and directed by Hollywood veteran Allan Dwan (Manhandled), who directed over 400 features and shorts from 1911 to 1961. The classic drama features stunning black-and-white cinematography by the legendary cameraman John Alton (The Crooked Way) with a wonderful cast featuring Ruth Warrick (Citizen Kane), Walter Brennan (Rio Bravo), Charlotte Greenwood (Oklahoma!), Jerome Cowan (Miracle on 34th Street), Margaret Hamilton (The Wizard of Oz) and Alan Napier (Alfred from TV’s Batman).

  1. Vickie L Gleason says:

Wow- these are all fabulous but I would need to say I would like Since You Went Away as it has such a wonderful cast and I have not seen it before.

  2. Bob Stein says:

I’ve never seen “The Whales of August” with both Lillian Gish and Bette Davis near the end of their lives. Davis especially had a resume of iconic performances and although Gish and Davis didn’t get along (this was Davis after all), acting for them both was an art and the story in this film is compelling.

  3. Mary Mallory says:

I’d love to win SINCE YOU WENT AWAY for many reasons. It’s a moving story of women on the homefront during World War II, beautifully shot, with a great cast, and very personal to David O. Selznick.

  4. Laura A. says:

I would pick I’ll Be Seeing You because it’s been on my to-watch list for so long.

  5. Jan Ostrom says:

My Intro to the love of Cinema was Lillian Gish in Griffith’s films. It was all over for me, silent film found and embraced me. It would be so wonderful to have her Whales of August. I, myself, am old, now, but each time I see her onscreen, I’m that young student again,.

  6. Garrett Solomon says:

I wouldn’t mind scoring a Blu-ray of “Since You Went Away,” simply because the premise sounds like “The Best Years of Our Lives” if the film was set on the home front during World War II, not after.

  7. Javier Valverde says:

I would like to win the film Since You Went Away because it’s a film that warms my heart because of Claudette Colbert’s performance as the Mother, because of Jennifer Jones’s character’s relationship with Robert Walker’s character, which reflected their real-life relationship and because of Max Steiner’s beautiful Oscar-winning score which added to the heart-warming feeling of family.

  8. Gloria Elizabeth says:

I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.
I would like to win “I’ll Be Seeing You” and “Driftwood”.
I’ve seen “I’ll Be Seeing You” once (a borrowed copy) and would love to see it again and share it with others.
I’ve never seen “Driftwood” but it sounds delightfully corny in that particularly Old-Hollywood way. In fact, it sounds REALLY goofy with the addition of “The Ox-Bow Incident” synopsis added at the beginning of the description. 🙂

  9. Stuart Cook says:

I would like to win SINCE YOU WENT AWAY. It is a powerful World War II drama with a dynamic cast. It would be great to see this in a restored, roadshow version. I have only seen it on commercial TV with commercial interruptions.
I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  10. Billy Slobin says:

I would just love to win Since you went away Blu Ray.
The cast is fabulous…Robert Walker, Claudette Colbert ,Jennifer Jones, Monty Wooley & Joseph Cotten are among my favorites as well as the rest of the supporting cast. WW2 homefront films are the best! I could write 100 reasons but don’t want to take up your time:)
Keep up the great work on this awesome blog!

  11. Nicholas Morales says:

    I’ll be seeing you

  12. Emma Stone says:

How surreal, I already won one of these!

Of these four, I’ll be picking Since You Went Away on blu-ray. Seen it on my Best Picture project, really well shot by Stanley Cortez and a nice story to go along with it.

  13. bill norris says:

Driftwood: Blu-Ray because im a Henry Morgan from Dragnet fan.

  14. Julie Moon says:

I would love to win “I’ll be Seeing You”! From Billy Wilder, one of the best directors, and a cast of some of my favorite actors including Marlena Dietrich and Charles Laughton- a real treasure! Thank you for the opportunity!

  15. Mark PAGAN says:

Always that impossible task: choose (just) one!
The only title I’ve barely heard of is Whales of August, but even with its fractured description (maybe some copy n’ paste clashing up there), I’m intrigued by the story of “eight-year-old Jenny”: I’d like to make some time to watch “Driftwood.”

  16. Lori Eber says:

Since You Went Away has always been one of my favorite movies. Love all the actors! It’s a perfect cast! And that Joseph Cotten was such a handsome man! Just an added bonus! I remember watching the movie as a child, with my mom. She loved the movie! I guess it has a special place in my heart.

  17. Michael Reed says:

I’ll Be Seeing You was my parents’ special film/song, ever since they dated in high school. When my father died, my mother found a frayed, old piece of paper in his wallet with the lyrics to I’ll Be Seeing You. I’d love to have a copy of the film on DVD; it is a great holiday movie, as well.

  18. Lindsey says:

I would go for Since You Went Away. I’ve been meaning to see it for years for the cast alone (what a bunch of all-stars!), but the story really interests me as well!

  19. Ashley says:

I would like Driftwood, mainly because I believe that I no longer have my store bought VHS tape. It was a blind buy, as I had never seen it before.

  20. Christian Ramos says:

I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message. (Privacy issues I had to halt my twitter for a while).

I would love to win Driftwood! I’m trying this year to collect a lot of the movies of Natalie Wood in honor of my grandmother. Each year on the anniversary of her death I watch a movie of Wood’s and this would be a great start to my small collection that only consists of West Side Story.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Oh that’s a wonderful idea. Thank you so much for entering and Good Luck 🙂 Sorry about your twitter account, hopefully you’ll start it again soon…

  21. Larry Hartzell says:

Joseph Cotten is my favorite actor, and I’ve seen almost everything he’s been in–except for “I’ll Be Seeing You”! I’d love to win it!

  22. Chris Teel says:

I’d have to go with “Since you went away”. While it and “I’ll be seeing you” both portray life on the home front during WWII (a favorite topic because of stories my mom told) “Since you went away” has a more impressive cast.

  23. Erin Sullivan says:

They all look wonderful to watch. I would like to see Since You Went Away. It looks good. I’ve never seen it before.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Erin, I can’t seem to find your tweet. If you don’t have a twitter account or if your account is private – or if you don’t have an account – please let me know. Thanks 🙂

  24. Nancy says:

So many great titles, it’s hard to choose, but I’m going to go with the Whales of August because I’ve never seen the film, and I absolutely love the entire cast especially Vincent Price.

  25. Bianca B. says:

I’d love to win a copy of Since You Went Away!! It has an all star cast and Guy Madison is in it; his first movie role. It’s also one of Shirley Temple’s adult movie roles that I’ve watched.

  26. Ron Fisher says:

I’ll be seeing you would be my choice because it is one of many Ginger films I don’t have that I find really charming.

  27. Joan O’Malley says:

I would love to win “Since You Went Away”. I watch it every time it’s on TCM and never get tired of it. The cast is superb as well as the musical score. My parents would gave been the same age as Jane and Bill and this movie gives me a little insight as to what they would have gone through.

  28. Christian Ramos says:

I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

I don’t know if I have to enter again per week! Sorry if I duplicate here lol.
Anyway, I would love to win Driftwood for my collection just based on wanting to collect and watch more of Natalie Wood’s stuff.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Nope, you are totally good to go. You only have to enter this contest once and you are eligible for each week’s drawing. Good Luck 🙂

  29. ross says:

I would love to win a copy of Since You Went Away. It’s one of my favorite films, and I’ve always wanted to own it. It stars many of my favorites, Colbert, Jones, Cotten, Walker, Woolley, Hattie McDaniel, Shirley Temple, and is from the studio of another favorite, David O. Selznick. My parents were of the WWII generation, my mom was the same age as Shirley Temple and my dad fought in the war. It’s a wonderful movie and I’m excited to see Kino Lorber’s new edition.

  31. Cher Bibler says:

I love Ginger Rogers! So I’ll be seeing you is at the top of my list. Although, whew, Natalie Wood. Yeah. Driftwood. And of course Claudette Colbert, Since You Went Away. And, really, we’re supposed to pick just one? Cause Bette Davis? Mmhmm. Guess I’d be happy with any of these.

  32. Tim says:

So I would like I’ll Be Seeing You on blu ray. It looks like a great film and does it get any better than Ginger Rogers?

    Hope I win!!

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Thanks so much Bill! I really appreciate your comment. CMH is a labor of love for me (understatement 🙂

  34. Modgirl says:

Making us choose just one? How mean. LOL. all of them are amazing but I’ve never seen Whales of August. I would love to see these great classic Hollywood actresses in an end of life movie– Davis, Gish, Sothern & the genteel usually creepy film actor ,Vincent Price!!! Has he ever been in a film where he didn’t play a villain? I can’t wait to find out!!!

  35. Amarillys Romero says:

Great films! But of them all I would like to with Since You Went Away! It’s such a beautiful film of the reality at home during wartime in the midst of a war. It has and amazing cast too! Love that film!

  36. Kimpunkrock says:

I want I’ll Be Seeing You because I love Joseph cotton and have never seen this title. Kino is great! They release the best titles! Thanks for the opportunity!

  37. Kim Bragg says:

I like “The Whales of August” Bette Davis & Lillian Gish. Ms. Davis was an actress that in one movie could steal your heart and in the next, she would rip it out and step on it. No one like here before, then or after. Ms. Gish seemed to have a beautiful soul along with Annabel, her sister. Two great actresses near the end of their reign, but never to be forgotten.

  38. I would like to win The Bishop’s Wife because I absolutely love Cary Grant and this movie always makes me feel good.

  39. Laurie says:

I’d love to win Driftwood on DVD. I’ve never seen it…the plot sounds similar to Pollyanna which I love!! Thank you for the opportunity!

  40. Morgan Lockhart says:

I would love to win I’ll Be Seeing You because it’s such a lovely and sad movie. I love the song too!

  41. Gloria Elizabeth says:

DRIFTWOOD arrived last week. I was so enchanted that I watched it twice, once as itself, and once with the very interesting voice-over commentary. This movie had everything a lover of sentiment and thumping good story could want, all writ large and gorgeously filmed by John Alton. Natalie Wood as Jenny had me from the first shot of daisies in her toes.
I had never heard of this movie before its mention here. Now I’m wondering how many other forgotten gems are out there waiting for me.
Thank you and Kino Lorber for your generosity.
