About the Book:  A legendary beauty, hailed as one of the greatest singing actors of her time, Jarmila Novotná (1907–1994) was an internationally known opera soprano from the former Czechoslovakia. Best known for her performances in Der Rosenkavalier, The Marriage of Figaro, and La Traviata, she was a celebrated performer at the Metropolitan Opera and other theaters across Europe and the United States. A “natural screen actress,” Novotná also appeared in Hollywood hits such as The Search (1948) with Montgomery Clift (with whom she shared an enduring friendship) and The Great Caruso (1951) with Mario Lanza. She was also considered a pioneering “crossover” star who performed on Broadway, and worked in radio and television with Bing Crosby and Abbott and Costello. Throughout this memoir, lavishly illustrated with photos from her personal collection, Novotná shares entertaining stories about her time in Hollywood, an “unending stream of parties”― including those hosted by Louis B. Mayer, co-founder of MGM Studios―alongside such stars as Jimmy Stewart and Elizabeth Taylor. Novotná also offers revealing profiles of many notable artistic figures of the time, including director Max Reinhardt, composer Cole Porter, and conductor Arturo Toscanini, and dignitaries such as Dwight Eisenhower and Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, the first president of Czechoslovakia. This fascinating self-portrait offers a window on history and the reflections of a captivating and supremely talented figure who left an indelible mark on the performing arts.

  1. Robert Stein says:

I remember seeing Jarmila Novotna in “The Search”, a gem of a film with fine performances all around. I always wanted to know more about Novotna and wondered what happened to her. This book is a good opportunity to find out.

  2. francis peters says:

I would love to become familiar with her work as I have never been exposed to opera growing up.

  3. Christine Brennan says:

    THE QUESTION:
What is one of your favorite Jarmila Novotna films or performances, and why? And, if you’re not familiar with her work, why do you want to win this book?

While I am not familiar with Ms. Novotna’s work, I am fascinated by this period of movies – particularly musicals. I would love to read this!

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi Christine, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Please confirm that you tweeted, or let me know if you don’t have a twitter account, or if it’s private. Thanks so much!

  4. Billy Slobin says:

I would love to win and read this book about Jarmila Novotna because I only know her from The Great Caruso and learning more about her and her career would be very enlightening to me!! I am super intrigued by the people she worked with over the years and really look forward to reading how they came to work together.

  5. Vickie L Gleason says:

The only film I know I’ve seen her in was Hans Prinker and The Silver Skates so I would love to learn more about her and her career!

  6. Angela says:

I loved Jarmila Novotna in Max Ophuls’ early musical The Bartered Bride. I would love to learn more about her career and by extension, more about operatic performance in the mid 20th century and her relationships with all sorts of people who also fascinate me (Ophuls, Montgomery Clift, Toscanini, and others).

I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  8. Carl Scott says:

I’m afraid that I’m really not familiar with her work but the book looks fascinating! Thanks so much for the chance to win a copy!!

  9. Amy Condit says:

I’m not familiar with Jarmila Novotna’s work. One of the things I treasure about the Classic Movie Hub blog is being exposed to unfamiliar artists and their work. I read the blurb about the Novotna memoir—and it seems it would be a compelling read on many levels. She was a first person witness to her homeland being taken over by the Germans and then the Russians, was a cultural phenomenon in many mediums (Stage, film, and television), and was the toast of the town, and feted by songwriters, royalty, and other celebrities. I would love to learn more about her, and am excited about the chance to win the book.

  10. Mark PAGAN says:

Why? Because I’m a curious monkey! Not familiar at all, but the preview you provide drops a few tantalizing names.. why not?

  11. I am not very familiar with Jarmila Novotna. But I am a huge fan of classic movie actresses in general. One day, I wish to know a good deal about many of movie actresses, and actors, so of course getting this book would be a wonderful asset to my little collection of information of golden hollywood actresses. I love reading books about beautiful golden hollywood. I read chapters and chapters every night. Watching classic hollywood movies is hobby of mine. I love watching movies from the periods of 1920-1960. Watching them is like an escape from reality. Reading about people from the past gives me the encouragement to not give up on my dreams and to pursue them; and that I am doing! So definitely having the privilege to receive “Jarmila Novotna: My Life in Song” would be a wonderful gift. It would be a pleasure to attain this book.
