…..

About the book: Everyone was “In the Mood for Love,” when Frances Langford, renowned Big Band singer with a rich contralto voice, rose from performing at hometown parties in Mulberry, Florida to Broadway, Old Time Radio, and movies during Hollywood’s Golden Era. Her signature song carried her from turntables to troops in World War Two, and then into the stuff of legends. From the airwaves on Louella Parson’s Hollywood Hotel, Rudy Vallée’s The Fleischmann’s Yeast Hour, and Dick Powell’s Campana Serenade (1942-1943), Frances achieved nationwide fame as Don Ameche’s insufferable wife, Blanche, on The Bickersons (1946-1951). Her beauty eclipsed her broadcasts, when the movies plucked her from speakers to screens. Her film debut in Every Night at Eight(1935) led to Broadway Melody of 1936 (1935), in which she popularized “Broadway Rhythm” and “You Are My Lucky Star,” Born to Dance (1936), and Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942) with James Cagney, in which she sang the rousing “Over There.” For the first time, her personal interviews with author/publisher Ben Ohmart bring the treasured memories from her past to light. Return with her to the front lines from 1941 into the 1980s with Bob Hope and Jerry Colonna on U.S.O. tours through Europe, North Africa, and the South Pacific, entertaining thousands of G.I.s throughout the world. Frances Langford. More than a voice. More than the G.I.s’ choice. Illustrated with hundreds of never-before-seen photos from the Frances Langford Collection in Lakeland, Florida.

15 Responses to Frances Langford: Armed Forces Sweetheart – Book Giveaway (November)

  1. Robert Stein says:

Langford threw herself into entertaining our troops with all the vigor and determination she could, and when our troops needed entertainment most during WWII. It’s her vocals though that are her crowning achievement, yet she never really made it to the top of the ladder of vocalists. Still, she left a legacy of song and patriotism that everyone can admire.

  2. Scott says:

I love Frances Langford’s gorgeous contralto voice. She was one of the best singers of the 20th Century. Her great Capitol LP, “Frances Langford Sings Old Songs for Old Friends,” which really needs to be reissued on CD, is a desert island disc for me. Looking forward to reading this new book!

  3. Carl Scott says:

I’m really not familiar with Ms Langford although her name does ring a bell with me. Please enter my name in the draw, I’d love to learn more. Thanks!!

  4. Gloria Elizabeth says:

I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.
That smile and that iconic sweetheart neckline! I don’t know this woman but I should. I’ve seen Yankee Doodle DANDY at least a dozen times. Clearly I was only watching Cagney up and down those stairs.

  5. Billy Slobin says:

I’ve always loved super Patriotic Frances Langford!
I first became aware of her on the Bob Hope USO tour shows that used to air on the Military Channel.
I later discovered her on The Bickersons on old time radio.
I love old time Hollywood and very much love to read about stars of the WW2 era!
I sure hope I win as this book looks great!

  6. Mark PAGAN says:

    Hmm.. if you’re having trouble, I’ll try n’ help…

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

LOL, thank you for your help! Hate to see a good prize go without a winner this week. That said, you were the first entry tonight, so you are the winner 🙂

  7. Chris Teel says:

I’m interested in anyone, celebrity or not, who supported the troops and kept
up The Home Front. Important then as it is now.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Thanks so much for trying to help me out 🙂 Our winner posted about 20 mins ago — but you are in good standing for next week’s prize. THANKS again for entering…

  8. Laurie says:

I’m not familiar with her work, but would love to read about her amazing life.

  9. Chris says:

I had to perform Yankee Doodle Dandy and other songs in my 8th grade play (many, many years ago). It’d be nice to read this book and learn more about Frances’ work.

  10. Laura A. says:

Had never heard of her but sounds like an interesting book!

  11. Craig Buehler says:

I’m in the mood for love is one of the all time great songs
