My favorite John Wayne movie is “Without Reservations” with Claudette Colbert. Loved seeing him in a rom-com instead of his usual western or combat movie.
Oh that is such a fun one! There are a few John Wayne romantic comedies that I enjoy, one of them is Without Reservations and the other is A Lady Takes a Chance with Jean Arthur.

My favorite John Wayne movie is 1947’s “Tycoon” due to it’s beautiful setting and it’s just something different for Mr. Wayne. Really a fun watch.
I’ve never seen Tycoon, but I will definitely put it on my list. One of the advantages of running a contest like this is learning about the classics that I haven’t explored yet (too many good ones and not enough hours in the day)!

I have to pick War Wagon because it was the first John Wayne movie I ever saw, so it stuck with me. Also, Kirk Douglas is in it which makes it doubly as good 🙂

“The Seachers” for the beauty of John Ford’s directing, the intensity and complexity of the story, and the delicate work of Wayne in creating a character who is at once an open book and a mass of secrets.

Rio Bravo, partly because it was the first movie that I was aware someone wrote and directed it and actual people starred in. Since then, it’s become my favorite movie that isn’t Star Wars. I’ve seen that film so many times that it always feels like I’m hanging out with old friends. And I think that’s the vibe Howard Hawks was going for. There’s a loose, relaxed quality to it. Hawks is perfectly content to let scenes play out instead of rushing them. That being said, this is the fastest 2.5 hour movie I’ve ever seen.
Another great film; haven’t seen it in ages though, so I guess it’s about time to watch it again 🙂

The 1956 American Epic, “The Searchers”. I favor this over all the other performances by “The Duke” primarily because Ethan Edwards is a more complex character compared to Chance and Ol’ Rooster. His hatred for the Native Americans takes the film down a violent path of mayhem and revenge, one that strongly distances itself very far away from the typical protagonist that Wayne has played. One of my favorite quotes from Wayne “That’ll be the day” was also included in the film. The cinematography also does a marvelous job to pull you into the various scenes whether it be the Native American chase across the plateau, or the snowy encounter with the buffalo.

The Sons Of Katie Elder, because it has humor, action, fist fights, gunfights, Dean Martin raffling off his fake glass eye, James Gregory being the worst father ever, Dennis Hopper being nervous and cowardly, and George Kennedy giggling as he dunks a guy’s head in a water barrel.

My favorite John Wayne movie would have to be “They Were Expendable” (1945). This film is not the typical war movie because it is about a PT Boat squadron serving in the infamous Battle of The Philippines during WWII and few movies have touched on that subject. The actors give a good performance, including Wayne and the movie leaves a very lasting impression. It is also the first war movie that made me cry and it simply gets better every time I see it.

My favourite John Wayne film is ‘Reap the Wild Wind’, a film with boundless energy, great set pieces and great character development. Oh, and it also has an awesome giant squid! !

I like True Grit. Mr. Wayne was tough, funny and plain great in that role. I am Canadian, not sure if I’m eligible to win a copy of the book but just wanted to share too 🙂

‘Fort Apache,’ because it contains terrific performances from many iconic John Ford actors, including John Wayne and Henry Fonda, beautiful Monument Valley locations, and a moving and mature Western story.

The one I prefer is Fort Apache. John Wayne and Henry Fonda was a great pairing.
It was the firist JW film I saw at around 10 and have always watched when it’s on TV even though I have it on DVD 🙂

My favorite John Wayne film has to be McLintock! To me it has all the best elements of a John Wayne movie. It has great comedy, romance, action, and an outstanding cast, including Maureen O’Hara. As I watch it, it just seems that everyone in the movie is having such a great time. I try to never miss it when it airs on TV.

“Stagecoach” (1939) — just saw it again about a month ago. Amazing chemistry between all of the actors, and a great performance by John Wayne in the pivotal role that gave his career a boost from the “B” films (although I love his “B” films, too!).
Saw Stagecoach a few months ago on the big screen and it was extraordinary!!! Good choice 🙂

My favourite Wayne film would most likely be ‘Red River’. It’s just a beautiful mess of a film with humour, drama, and suspense in all the right places, but in the wrong ways.
