  1. I guess I have to go with Philip Marlowe as portrayed by Dick Powell in MURDER, MY SWEET. I’ve read all of the Raymond Chandler Marlowe novels, and Powell’s portrayal is the closest to the hard-luck white knight detective, who is more likely to get a sap to the back of the head than to get the girl. Marlowe always has a witty rejoinder for any situation, no matter how menacing, and Powell has better comic timing than others (including Bogart) who’ve played the part. The Chandler novels were my gateway to film noir, so Marlowe will always be a favorite.

  2. Lana Hall says:

My favorite film noir character will forever be Gilda from ‘Gilda’ for many reasons, partly because I’m a big fan or Rita Hayworth as well as it being one of the first film noirs I fell in love with but mainly how relatable the character of Gilda actually is. A lot of femme fatale’s in film noirs are unbelievably cold and ruthless but with Gilda she is just simply a hurt woman turned cold by heart break even though you can still sense throughout the film how much she really does still love Johnny and a lot of the revenge things she does are just as much painful for herself. And I’m a sucker for the romance between Gilda and Johnny!

  3. Connie Hsu says:

My all-time favorite Film Noir character has to be Walter Neff from DOUBLE INDEMNITY (1944) because for some reason, Fred MacMurray playing anything just delights me because all I can see is him playing his character from THE APARTMENT (1960) and it just makes him a more likeable character out of all the terrible and frankly un-likeable characters that we often meet in the Film Noir genre. I mean, it’s Fred MacMurray! in a Noir! Instead, he’s just this nice, ordinary insurance salesman and everything is just so ironic and fitting at the same time. Anyways, I love the way he falls so blindly into Miss Phyllis’s plans (but also OH BOOOOOY I LOVE HER AND I LOVE STANWYCK TOO) and the way they interact and flirt back and forth. So, for these unusual reasons, he’s probably my favorite character from Film Noir.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Fred MacMurray — so underrated… could play the best dad and the biggest scoundrel! Thanks for entering and Good Luck 🙂

  4. Ashley Hinz says:

I’m not a huge fan of the genre, but I appreciate it. I wasn’t sure until now if there was an alternative contest. I have too many to keep track up. I have a list, in an effort to solve the problem. There are some movies which are noir in tone, even today. I also entered on Twitter, but this doubles my chances. Debating which movie I would choose.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Thanks Ashley as always, for entering, and for continuing to support us 🙂 Thanks so much for entering and Good Luck! PS: have a Happy Thanksgiving!

  5. Emily Graziano says:

Well, its kind of later to enter, but still not too late! One of my favorite noir characters is Laura from Laura (1944). Gene Tierney is just so mysterious, and she plays the role so well with the limited screen time she does have. She’s not a “femme fetale” in the strictest sense, but she’s still dangerous to men in the fact any man who meets her falls under her spell of beauty. As for men, one of my favorite characters is Joe Gillis in Ssnset Blvd (1950). I love William Holden, and I just feel so bad for him for the whole movie. He just wants to get his career going and then he gets trapped into helping Norma Desmond! I feel for him!

  6. Erin Wolverton says:

I love Brigid O’Shaughnessy, the femme fatale played by Mary Astor in The Maltese Falcon. I’ve been enjoying #noirvember!

  7. Frances Ryl says:

I love the film noir genre! My favorite film noir actor is Robert Mitchum. My favorite film noir movie is Out of the Past. I haven’t seen many on the list above. I love Humphrey Bogart. I saw He Ran All the Way, John Garfield was excellent, very tense film.

  8. Richard Peterson says:

    Humphrey Bogart

  9. Stella Weng says:

All of the above are great choices. So I’ll declare my affection for Debby Marsh, played by Gloria Grahame in “The Big Heat”. She gets horribly burned by Lee Marvin’s thuggish character, but comes back selflessly in a turnaround that had me choking up at the end. A wonderful performance!
