About the Play: CAGNEY is the dramatic new musical that follows the life of the legendary James Cagney from the streets of New York to his rise as one of the brightest stars of Hollywood, from a vaudeville song-and-dance man to the cinema’s original tough guy. Broadway’s Robert Creighton, in the role he was born to play, leads a cast of six who tap dance through a score that blends original music with classic George M. Cohan favorites, including Give My Regards To Broadway, Grand Old Flag, and Yankee Doodle Dandy.

I am so, so, so very happy that this play made it to NY. It’s about time someone honored Jim for all he did with his wonderful feet, besides those flying fists of his in so many movies!

  2. tracy says:

i loved loved him in both white heat and yankee doodle dandy! both films hes just amazing. white heat he plays this almost brando like character and ends up being almost destroyed in the end. yankee doodle dandy, he is an amazing cohan! his enitre performance was great!

  3. Jocelyn says:

Oops — sorry for the above comment.
Meant to say: My favorite MOVIE with Cagney (for whom my passion is growing!) is probably WHITE HEAT, because I love noir, and also he, Virginia Mayo, and Edmund O’Brien are all great. My favorite Cagney performance in a film so far, is FOOTLIGHT PARADE — he’s so fun, and adorable there! Hope to win tix! Thanks 🙂

  4. Bill Yellin says:

Cagney made so many great movies, but I want to mention two: “Yankee Doodle Dandy” and “1, 2, 3”.

There’s a moment in YDD (a sappy film, but fun to watch) after Cagney, as an aging George M. Cohan well after the end of his song & dance career, comes out of FDR’s office in the White House. He’s so pumped by the meeting with the President that he TAP DANCES down the stairs like he was twenty years old! For me, it’s the moment that makes the film. Best part is, it was an ad-lib! He was just supposed to walk downstairs like an old man while the music handled the drama. Nope!

Fortunately, director Michael Curtiz saw the artistry, and left it in.

In “1, 2, 3”, Cagney, in his 60’s, plays the slickest, fastest-talking, most frenetic character of his entire film career. For two hours he runs rings around everyone else in the picture. This performance would have left any of his contemporaries breathless and sweating. Rivals ANYTHING he ever played. Best moment? Red Buttons, as an Army MP, comes in to arrest him. Cagney talks him out of it and insults him, to boot. There they stand, two veteran film actors nose to nose, and Buttons hitches up his shoulders and does the best Cagney gangster-impression I’ve ever seen, right to his face!

Not to be missed. There’ll never be another like him. In a nod to the people who posted here before me and what they wrote, he truly was the “top of the world, Ma!”

Wonderful choices! And for good reason! Thanks so much for entering and Good Luck 🙂

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

      Hi Bill,

I am happy to say that are one of our winners! I just sent you an email. If you don’t receive it, please let me know by posting here.

      Thanks!

  5. One of my favorite James Cagney movies is “White Heat”. I enjoyed the film’s narrative, his portrayal of gangster Arthur Jarrett and his chemistry with Virginia Mayo. The grand scale scenes in the state prison were filmed beautifully and you really believe he was psychotic in this role.

  6. Sarah Packard says:

I’m gonna be honest and admit, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Cagney movie (sorry!)…I really want to though, and I want to learn more about him, which is why I need to see this show – I hear it’s terrific, and I love Robert Creighton (and tap dancing)!! 🙂

  7. William DuBritz says:

City for Conquest is my favorite James Cagney, because I always get teary-eyed at the end when Cagney’s character Young Samson says to his childhood sweet heart who broke his heart “you’ll always be my girl Peg”.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Hi, haven’t seen your tweet yet. If you have a twitter account, please don’t forget to tweet the qualifying message, and if you don’t have twitter, please let me know here on this blog. Thanks!

  8. Karen Campbell says:

“The Bride Came C.O.D.” simply because Bette Davis is in it, too.

  9. Ben Deutsch says:

It’s gotta be WHITE HEAT — arguably Cagney’s greatest gangster performance, and therefore one of the greatest gangster performances of all time. Gloriously unhinged work. “Made it, Ma! Top of the world!”

  10. I loved James Cagney in “Man of a Thousand Faces”, “Ragtime”, “The Seven Little Foys”, “The West Point Story”, “Mister Roberts”, “White Heat” and my all-time favorite “Yankee Doodle Dandy”!!!! It’s interesting that Mr. Cagney portrayed George M. Cohan twice – in “Yankee Doodle Dandy” and “The Seven Little Foys”. James Cagney was a class act – he could act and dance!!!

I do not have a Twitter account so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  11. Wendy Mays says:

WHITE HEAT has to be my favorite Cagney film. For him to be older, and return to his old gangster roles had to be a hard choice for him, but the script is fantastic. I discovered the film in my early 20s (I’m 40), and identified with the headaches. Not that I was prone to killing while having them, but I understood the pain.
PLUS – I love the Madonna song of the same title which samples the song. I’m unashamed of that fact.

  12. Michelle says:

My favorite is Angels with Dirty Faces, it has a great
cast and I like how you see karma at work.

  13. Lucille Cumming says:

In ALL honesty, I would have to choose, ” The Strawberry Blonde” as my favorite movie of James Cagneys. The rare chance to see him as a comedic actor with just a hint of his fighting side just keeps me smiling and laughing. I do not have a TWITTER account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

    • Annmarie Gatti says:

Although I really enjoy his gangster roles, I have to say that The Strawberry Blonde is one of my all-time faves! Thanks for entering and Good Luck 🙂

  14. Jackie says:

Favorite Cagney movie is tough to choose but probably White Heat or 13 Rue Madeleine (although I’m sure I spelled that wrong! 🙂 ) Thanks!
