About the Book:  In a powerful novel in verse, an award-winning author offers an eye-opening look at the life of Marilyn Monroe. From the day she was born into a troubled home to her reigning days as a Hollywood icon, Marilyn Monroe (née Norma Jeane Mortenson) lived a life that was often defined by others. Here, in a luminous poetic narrative, acclaimed author Carole Boston Weatherford tells Marilyn’s story in a way that restores her voice to its rightful place: center stage. Revisiting Marilyn’s often traumatic early life—foster homes, loneliness, sexual abuse, teen marriage—through a hard-won, meteoric rise to stardom that brought with it exploitation, pill dependency, and depression, the lyrical narrative continues through Marilyn’s famous performance at JFK’s birthday party, three months before her death. In a story at once riveting, moving, and unflinching, Carole Boston Weatherford tells a tale of extraordinary pain and moments of unexpected grace, gumption, and perseverance, as well as the inexorable power of pursuing one’s dreams. A beautifully designed volume.

  1. Carl says:

Marilyn was a symbol of so many things to my generation and others as well. I love the idea of passing her legend, and the lessons we can learn from her life, down to younger people. Thanks for the chance to win a copy of this cool book.

  2. Vickie Gleason says:

I’d love to win this book so I can share with some young readers and help spark their interest in Marilyn and other classic stars.

  3. Kassidy Jacobs says:

I would like to win this book due to how much I admire Marilyn. It always saddens me that she was often reduced to the stereotypical “blonde” character she used to play. She was someone who was complex, troubled, and overall a mesmerizing woman. She is much deeper than people thought, and deserved so much more credit for all of the things she endured. I think I will like this style of the book, as it will emphasize the lessons of Marilyn’s life and all that she represents to so many. I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

  4. Diana says:

I really enjoy books in verse when they’re about an actual person, I feel like it gives more to their stories. And Marilyn’s is one I would love to read.

  5. TheNomiGirl says:

I’d like to win this book because Marilyn has always been a role model for me, since i’m a kid. I want to use this book to inspire other little girls and tell them they’re pretty ♥️

  6. I’m the author of this book. Writing the verse novel BEAUTY MARK was a revelation for me. Marilyn revealed herself to be a mood, a mystery, and a mirror of mid-century. Like Marilyn Monroe, I prefer denim, dazzle in dresses, read Rilke, write poetry, paint, and have perfected the pout. To hear the book’s opening poem, link to the book trailer below.

Hoping for podcast interviews about the book. If you want to book me, cbwpoet@gmail.com

  7. Christopher S says:

This definitely is a fantastic way to introduce my past to my kids. I am a big fan of the entertainment and music industries, and would enjoy the chance to introduce Marilyn to my children!

  8. Billy Slobin says:

My love of classic Hollywood runs deep and I love Marilyn’s work.
Early films like Niagara, River of no return, Bus Stop and 7 Year itch are in my annual rotation. I love Sugar Kane and The Misfits too! Her loss just 2 months before I was born has always haunted me a bit with the murky circumstances…To think of all the great films she could’ve made had she lived longer sigh!
