Sheila Hancock is a British comedian and actress. She never really seemed to be at home in films, ("Night Must Fall", 1963 and "How I Won the War", 1967), her greatest successes mostly having been on stage and in television comedy series. She was married to actors Alex Ross (1955 until his death in 1971) and John Thaw (1973 until his death in 2002).

Mother of actress Melanie Thaw, born 1964, (with first husband Alec Ross) and Joanna Thaw, born 1974, (with second husband John Thaw). When John Thaw married Hancock he decided to adopt Melanie officially, which is why she bears his surname.

Won her first Laurence Olivier award, for her role in Cabaret at the age of 73.
