Played Gertrude in "Hamlet" in two major productions on screen and stage: the Oscar-winning 1948 film version (Hamlet (1948)) with Laurence Olivier (she was 11 years his junior) and in the 1964 Broadway production of Hamlet (1964/I) with Richard Burton (she was seven years his senior) that was also filmed and shown in limited engagements.

A close friend of "All My Children" (1970) co-star Louis Edmonds for many years, she is quoted extensively in his biography, "Big Lou," by Craig Hamrick. As discussed in the book, Herlie spent many weekends visiting Edmonds at his Long Island estate, The Rookery.

Daughter of Patrick Herlihy and Isobel Cowden Herlihy of Glasgow, Scotland.
