Pale, initially dark-haired (later blonde) American actress of fragile appearance, who was married to John Barrymore from 1928 to 1935. Returned to the screen after the break-up of her marriage but soon found that her silent screen image had dated and left films for good in the 1940s. Daughter of early silent actor Maurice Costello, sister of actress Helene Costello (with whom she appeared in films as a child), and mother of actor John Drew Barrymore (John Barrymore Jr).
