Tall, angular, aloof-looking English character actor who cornered the market in prissy professors in the Hollywood of the forties. A former dancer and revue artist, he became an inveterate scene-stealer in comic cameos, and also scored in the occasional serious role, such as his schoolmaster in The Green Years. Also a writer (as Edwin Carp) and director.
