After a distinguished stage career, British actress May Whitty, made her first Hollywood film at age 72, and largely stayed in Hollywood for the last 11 years of her life, exuding kindliness, resourcefulness and British common sense. She was most memorable as the disappearing Miss Fray in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Lady Vanishes". She received Academy Award nominations for "Night Must Fall" and Mrs. Miniver".
