One of the cinema's most indomitable ladies: a tiny blonde American actress with a sweet smile, and a long nose that gave her an old-young face. Started as a teenager with D.W. Griffith in 1916, then became one of the silent screen's great beauties before working hard to make the transition to sound, often in early musicals. Came to Britain in the early thirties and stayed, no longer pursuing her career with such single-mindedness, but playing cameo roles as she chose.
