Dame Peggy Ashcroft was one of Britain's most distinguished actresses through several decades. She appeared only very rarely in films, confining her career almost entirely to the stage -- where she became a delicate and distinctive interpreter of Shakespeare -- and radio. But her warmth and talent were evident even in cinematic roles and she won an Academy Award for her performance in A Passage to India at 77.
