James Gleason was a wiry American actor with a pencil mustache and raspy Brooklyn accent -- a familiar face from the onset of sound in scores of films as policemen, editors, army sergeants, taxi drivers and cynically wisecracking best friends. He never failed to build an identifiable and usually likable character. He was a long-term sufferer from asthma, which was eventually the cause of his death at age 72. He also wrote plays for theatre and screenplays for the cinema. He was nominated for an Academy Award for "Here Comes Mr. Jordan".
