Bubbling, dark-haired British comedian/singer, whose Lancashire-slanted mixture of comic songs and romantic ballads made her the most popular recording star of her day. Despite coming to films in her thirties, she quickly became Britain's (and, briefly, the world's) highest-paid film star, cruising her chirpy personality through a series of soft-centered, artfully-contrived tragi-comedies. Lost her popularity (and her British film career) when deciding to live abroad during World War II. Married (second of three) director/comedian Monty Banks (1897-1950). Created Dame in 1979.
