Lois Weber was the first American woman director of note, directing over 135 films between 1911 and 1934. She pioneered split screen technique in 1913 , was the first woman director to own her own film studio, and was one of the first directors to experiment with sound. In 1916, Weber directed 10 feature films for Universal (nine of which she also wrote) -- and she became Universal Studios' highest-paid director, earning $5,000 a week.
