Exquisite English blonde actress with glazed china face. Her enormous popularity in British films inevitably led to an exit for Hollywood, but her films there included too few worthy of her beauty and talents. Best remembered as the handcuffed lady in The 39 Steps (Hitchcock version), her four marriages included one to actor Sterling Hayden, from 1942 to 1946.
